Official Barefaced Bass Cab Club

So today I pulled out a Rob Allen Deep 4 to spend some good fretless time with the BB2. This bass is strung with Status black nylon tapewounds and has a very nice piezo pickup/preamp. I confirmed my preference for dialing the BB2 horn to about 25% on. Sounded much more organic and like an upright. Haven't been playing this bass much for quite a while and forgot about the the Fdeck HPF Pre Series 3 I used to use at gigs. Wow, what a difference! Night and day. Tone was more clear and authentic. Dialed to cut at about 45Hz. Was thinking about selling this bass and moving to an EUB form factor. I dunno, the RA sounds really good! But if you're using a bass with a piezo through the BB2, be sure to try an HPF. Makes all the difference!

It just doesn't add a tweeter sound to the cab, instead it compliments the woofer and contributes to the cab's organic tone in a way I never experienced before.

Yep, same thoughts here. My older cabs would get quite harsh and clanky with the tweeters turned up, so i was hesitant about getting a BB2 as i dont normally like tweeters. Since the moment i plugged the BB2 in the tweeter has been right up, and its never sounded harsh, clanky, too bright etc. It just makes things clearer in a musical way. turning it off makes the top end warmer without it sounding muffled. In fact i cant really hear much difference from, say 100% and 50% in a live situation (and this must surely be where it counts). For me its still a 100% or 0% option. That might be my ears though. Fantastic design nonetheless.

Playing music through my cabs today. I was surprised the One10 voicing sounded enjoyable for listening. In fact, I might prefer it over the SM. I tried stacking the SM/SC/One10 in various combos, while running my laptop into the Aux on the Genz Shuttle 9.0. My favorite combo was the One10 and SC. I would've expected the One10 and SM based on how they pair for playing bass, or the SM/SC for having similar drivers. Oddly, I didn't miss the highs through the SC as much as I thought I would. It really has me leaning toward moving a few bits of gear and scaling up to a BB2 and a Two10. I've seen this in the cards for a while, but today made things seem more likely.

Edit - See "oops" post below. I had a bad SM tweeter setting.

Just to clarify about the highs through the SC: you played music through the SC by itself & still sounded fairly balanced?

And also fairly balanced through just the One10?

Yes I did. I felt it was rolled off in the highs through the SC but still balanced. Not bad for a mono source. Not as good as my B&W speakers and NAD amp, but not terrible. While the SM had the tweeter, which I turned all the way up, I felt the SC was a bit more even, despite being rolled off.

Nothing terribly scientific was done. The cabs aren't stacked, so there's an off-axis factor since I didn't change my listening position much.

The One10 did have a voice to it, but it wasn't exaggerated or ridiculous for playback. In fact it was possibly like an EQ preset I might select on a car stereo or iPod EQ.

I was turned up but I certainly wasn't doing anything PA worthy. Though, tomorrow, the plan is to try the SC and SM stacked to run my synth through at a loud rehearsal. Laptop into Genz aux into the cabs. If all goes well I may flip the SM for a BB2. I like the SM but it is the odd duck in my collection.


Edit - Oops. Upon double checking, I had the tweeter going the wrong way on the SM. Results much improved by adjusting with ears.

Big loud industrial band with two guitars jam tonight. Ran my synth into the Genz into the SM & SC stack, along with PA support since everyone else was mic'd. Great sound. Plenty of volume. Electro drums sounded good. Didn't get a chance to plug in my bass with the band but played solo after, and got good volume. Not as loud as I expected but pretty darn loud.

I am now the proud owner of a BB2 and Super Midget. I'm running them separately or together with a GK MB800 Fusion.

The sound:
The clarity is amazing. My playing has cleaned up because I can hear my finger noise. Funny enough, it reminds me of riding a litre bike: no matter how much power / volume I ask for, this rig (or the bike) never runs out. The BB2 is full, deep, loud and light. The SC is smaller and seems to work harder to produce the same sound as the BB2. Neither disappoint separately and together I'm in heaven.

The service:
Alex was excellent. The SM arrived in TX with the tweeter broken off. Immediately I called and chatted with Barefaced staff. Within 4 days, a new tweeter and surround arrived. A quick install later, the SM was up and running. Customer service was second to none!

I also ordered the cab covers and they are well made, well fitted, add a bit of padding, and have a nice clean look.

When I had the SM cab apart, I snapped a pic of its well damped interior.

I am soooooo loving my BB2. So much so that I keep getting the band to rehearse just so I can use it, as we don't have many gigs booked at the moment :-).

I just can't get over how different it sounds to my old 1212L. Strong, clear, solid, loud, deep and, well I didn't really have a tone in my head when I went looking for a new cab, but this is definitly the closest I've ever come to having one.
I used to dread some gigs, as although I knew I'd be loud enough and get the job done with my 1212L I would struggle getting a tone I would be inspired by and so my playing would be quite empty. Not so now, now I can hear every note clearly I'm making every note count and not holding back due to notes just not getting across out front.

I've even stopped trying to play finger style and now love my pick playing. I've also got a VTBass Deluxe and even this sounds good to me, and I hated the first VTBass I had.

All in all, I'm now 'there' and don't have a want for anything else...except maybe a second BB2 :-).
