Official Barefaced Bass Cab Club

Anyone use a BEADG 5 string bass with the Super Twin II?
Just wondering how solid the low end is down low - I don't care so much about the fundamental of the note, just the perception of the notes below 40Hz.
Also, with the right EQing, could you get a convincing Reggae tone out of it?

Loads using 5-strings with Super Twins and I can think of at least one person using it solely for reggae - he posts quite a bit on basschat, not sure if he's over here too!

Thanks, Alex!
That what I figured.
I think the BT2 would Uber-kill for Reggae, but I am debating with myself about the tighter lows of the ST2 & whether I really need a HF driver.
Chris Cole (Kringle77) makes some good points about both subjects.

I would never describe the Super Twin as having tighter lows than the Big Twin 2 - I'd say the BT2 goes deeper and stays tighter whilst the ST has more of a typical bass cab thump to the bottom end. With very mellow sounds, the kind that sound great on record but are often lost live, I find the HF driver can be a really useful thing - not to add brightness per se but to outline the sound of finger on string, percussives, noise etc, which can help the ear hook onto a very deep tone with little midrange or treble.

Great Alex....

I know the BF stuff is much different than the FF cabs. Drivers a much different and better in the bf cabs. Bf cabs are pre bass cab like in a good way and work better for me live. Wish I could try the horn equiped version next to my supertwin. Honestly, Alex and I have had a few tense discussions but, if you have the money, you can't buy better cabs then the gen 3's.

Hi Svtb15,
It may be unfair to compare common tweeters to the barefaced high freq driver, I cannot specify the exact technical reason, but my bb2 is the first cab that I usually use with the high freq knob maxed out.
It just doesn't add a tweeter sound to the cab, instead it compliments the woofer and contributes to the cab's organic tone in a way I never experienced before.

That sounds like it is EXACTLY what i am looking for.

Having said that, I must admit I'm just petting the idea of getting a retro cab for certain vintage-ish tones....but my bb2 stays in

For the "vintage" tone, I just turn the tweeter dial off on my BB2. When I play my Rob Allen Deep 4 (fretless acoustic, tapewounds for "upright" tone) the tweeter is about 25% on. For my Jazz and P-bass I put the tweeter about 70% on.

The BB2 tweeter dial is a very useful and musical device for sculpting tone.

And yes, I'd put the BB2 tone in the same general neighborhood as Fearless cabs. My Fearless cabs had 10s so they probably were less girthy than a F112 or F212. My impression is Fearless has the ability to present a more mid-present tone; the BB2 has a slightly more organic tone and feel, both are fantastic cabs (you can't go wrong with either!), but I'm now leaning in the BB2 direction having used both. It could be a better match for my amp. Or maybe it's the Fender Jazz 5 I've been playing a lot lately that has a Sadowsky preamp and Fralin pickups. Who knows, so much of this is voodoo and lucking into a combination that works for you!

That is surprising about the low end.
Thanks again Alex for the info!

That's good to know.. But do you think the BB2 is Mid scooped? i don't want a scooped cab, but i also don't want somethig too mid forward.. I sorta like when its 'just right"..
But the BB2 seems like it could be Just Right

Not at all! there is no mid-scoop. Fearless has a button on the back that flips it into a "mid-boost" mode, and that coupled with the dedicated mid-driver produces the extra presence. The BB2 is very balanced and integrated - the crossover is magical!

I prefer handling EQ with my amp and not have EQ baked into the cab. You never know what the venue will require.

Nope...
The bb2 is amongst the flattest things in the universe...nothings added or lacking...be prepared

Chris, I've emailed you! You're correct on price.

You've explained it far better than I could in Italian! Because of how the 12XN driver and the HF driver behave turning the HF control down shifts the effective crossover frequency upwards whilst turning it up shifts the crossover downwards. We put a lot of effort into making the two drivers complement each other through their common frequencies, not just their phase response but their inherent tone due to diaphragm properties so that they do blend as seamlessly as possible when the HF control is all the way up. But then when you turn the HF control all the way off you get to hear the character of the 12XN driver in the treble, which significantly changes the vibe of the cab.
Q1: So is the set to off position all the way counter-clockwise?
Q2: As you get closer to the off position, does the HF driver get padded back as far as current supplied or what is going on?
Q3: Is the crossover & HF driver taken out of the circuit completely once you get to the off position?

1. All the way clockwise is off - screw it down like a tap.
2. Indirectly yes - it sees a smaller proportion of the voltage.
3. At the off position the 12XN drivers are running full-range and there is no sound at all coming from the HF driver.
