"Official" Carvin Club - Part 2

Here is my first "real" bass - an LB75 I purchased when I was around 16 (so around 16 years ago). Some kids saved for a car I saved for this. It has been my main bass up until recently. Fair amount of wear from slapping even though I don't really do it that often. Must be doing it wrong all these years. Anyway I still love this bass and will never part with it.
I liked the more squared off edges they had back then.

I just ordered a fretless neck for my B4 Koa bodyied bass a couple of weeks ago. I originally bought the bass as I had been shopping for a fretless jazz and came across this on craigslist.

I'm having an ebony fingerboard though, no dots, no lines and will probably use flatwounds. What's the deal with this finish? Is it something I should look into before they ship my neck?

Ebony will work fine without the Hard as Nails epoxy. I got it for 2 reasons. First, I really wanted a birdseye board and that is a NO due to being so soft. HAN would be mandatory. Secondly, rounds are tough on a board. I'm cautious and I wanted the piece of mind and flexibility to be able to play flats or rounds. You can call and talk to Bart. See if it's not too late to add if you want it. You'll be fine with ebony.

Hey all,

I just picked up a pretty sweet Carvin fretless a few weeks back, LB75 with the optional wider neck on it...tung oiled with koa wings and five piece maple neck. It looks like two of the stripes in the neck are koa as well. I'm guessing it is from the mid to late 90s. It works great. I did a setup on it and it sounds sweet. My question is, on the Carvins with the three EQ knobs, which knob controls what? I looked all over Carvins website and nada...zippo info. I "think" the closest one to the neck is treble, middle one is bass and the one closest to the bridge is mids. There seems to be a fair amount of interaction between the three controls so it's really hard to tell (and I've been playing bass for over 20 years!). So I feel like a noob...

As I recall the older ones were that way, mids nearest bridge, bass in the middle, treble towards the neck. It you look at the circuit board the mids pot is on a separate small board, like they added it to a previous version. That is the way they were in the early '00s anyway iirc.

Picked this up with a real bad black nitro finish a few months ago here in the Talkbass classifieds . I refinished it with Miniwax stain and tung oil , my first refinish job in years . The bass has the J 99s and the same electronics as the SB5000 . Plays and sounds great .

It should be bass, treble, mid from neck to bridge. Here is the document I suspect you were looking for:

Is the B50 and/or the SB5000 really a 35" bass?

Not that I sit around with a ruler up to my nuts all weekend, but I was bored and doing some measurements on my B50's, B25 and Fender P5, all of which are spec'd as 34" basses. Here's what I found:

On the B50's, the 34" measurement seems to be from the nut to the front of the bridge plate. But the distance to the saddles is 35". This is identical on both my B50's.

The B25 is about a 1/4-1/2" shorter, at ~34.5".

On my Fender P5, the measurement is 34" to the saddles (+/- a little intonation). Yet on the Fender P5, the B50s and the B25 the measurement from the nut to the middle of the 12th fret is identical at ~16.5".

What up? I know the XB series is made a 35" by moving the bridge back. I'm wondering if there is something similar going on here?

Anyone with an SB5000 (same neck as B50) got a sec to measure their basses?

Yep...took the new (to me) fretless Carvin to practice Saturday and it sounds so friggin nice...it just sings. My band mates are now begging me to use it on a bunch of songs that we do...

I already have a '92 LB75 all Koa fretted that I bought new. I can't believe that bass is 20 years old already. Me and the old girl hold a lot of secrets ;).

I hope the two basses get along...

Headphones are best. This video clip shows an A/B comparison between my 2004 LB70P and my 2012 LB70PF -- my first fretless!

It has a 3 piece body (walnut, maple, Claro top), 5 piece neck (walnut with 2 maple stripes), a birdseye maple board with no lines/no dots and "Hard As Nails" epoxy finish, and J99A single coils, piezos in the bridge saddles. Plays and sounds GREAT.
