Hey carvinites, I have a line on a LB76 that looks to be in decent shape from photos, but haven't seen in person because it is three hours away. My ? is about the 9 volt pre, which I have heard have issues. I don't know the year it was made. I s it worth the drive or should I just order a new SB 5000 like I was going to do in the first place. I now it is a vague question, but any suggestion are appreciated!!!THANKS!!!
Well, are you saving enought with your drive to cover the cost difference? Bear in mind that the conditions you play it in wherever you go to look at it are different than where you play every day. My weekly venue has background RF that is a major factor for me. Guitar player dosent have issues becase his amp is only pushing some 40 watts, while my bass amp is 450. For me it means allot to be able to play it in my normal "space".
I had bought an Ibanez SR1205e with single coils once last year, and while the controls cavity was sheilded at the factory, the single coil pup's were just magnificent antenni for noise. I liked the bass but ultimatly ended up sending it back and bought a different instrument.
Something to consider when driving miles to buy something off an ebay advert or the like.
Agreed, I play in venues that have very dirty power, I do use the carvin power conditioner which helps alot, my home power is good but it I don't want to get it and bring it home and have to deal with problems when I can get what I want new from the custom shop, thanks for the input!
Thanks for the compliment. For many hours I contemplated what colors/specs I wanted, and I will say I have NO regrets.
Regarding your question - unless it is a REAL significant difference in the price, I would just buy a brand spankin new one. That way you get what YOU want, the way you want it. There's nothing like having a guitar built to YOUR specifications.
Mine has the 18V active electronics, and they are worth every penny. Being that it's brand new, I haven't had any issues with them yet.
I am planning to purchase a 5 string bass, and it will most likely be a Carvin.
Dual HBs are available on neckthrough basses like the LB, XB and BB. Just not on bolt-necks like the B abd SB series.
As to the 9V pre question...
I have a B5 I bought new last year from the in stock section. I'm assuming it had been there a while considering that I think the quit making them a couple of years ago. I've played in some places that the power wasnt ideal for a show, and have never had any problems as far as noise or such, but I play with both pickups, not one or the other soloed. I have on occasion turned the knob one way or the other and not really noticed any noise problems. I know some have said the older electronics were weak, but I dont have any problem with how they sound in mine at all.

I honestly see absolutely no problem with the 9 volt preamp. In fact, I like it a lot. I have a '92 and a '04 and love them both. No noise problems, I like the tone controls, paired with J99s it's a match made in heaven for me.
I love the pre in my SB4000, too, and the added passive tone control gives a nice tonal option.

I think I am leaning towards ordering a custom shop, especially after seeing Mr. Backdrafts LB. And I really want the dual HBs, except with the orangeburst with the mahogony neck and body, and I really want a 5er, not a 6. What did Tom Petty say about the waiting? It will be my Xmas present

Agreed. The 9v pre in my '93 BB-75 is fine - and super quiet (unlike the passive single coil in my Squier CV 50's P bass).

This is my BB75 that I picked up on the TB classifieds this summer. I'm really loving this thing. It sounds great, and this has got to be the most ergonomic bass I've every played.

Out of curiosity: I'm just curious as to what you guys think. I bought an 11 YO Carvin B4 back in August off a Craigslist post, this is my first Carvin. My intention is to swap the neck out for a fretless neck; and probably change the J99 pickups out for a pair of humbucking Dimarzios.
I already have the replacment fretless neck from Carvin and just need to finish it with a tungoil finish.
Oh, and she'll probably get a hipshot bridge with piezo saddles too.
So after I make these mods, and the new headstock is logo-less, is it still a Carvin?

Coupla things: Unless it was modified, the pickups are probably not J99s.
When the mods are done, if it's a Carvin body and neck, then it's a modded Carvin, IMHO. If the neck isn't from Carvin, I'd say you'll have either a parts bass or a Franken-bass.
