When the mods are done, if it's a Carvin body and neck, then it's a modded Carvin, IMHO. If the neck isn't from Carvin, I'd say you'll have either a parts bass or a Franken-bass.

The J99 pickups showed up in 1999, so that's almost certainly what they are if they're not stacked humbuckers.

Also, Carvin started putting the Hipshot B bridge on their basses back in 1998. Unless someone swapped the original out, you've already got a Hipshot on there.

So after I make these mods, and the new headstock is logo-less, is it still a Carvin?

The Carvin website and Carvin Museum site give you instructions on what to look for on different pickups to be able to identify them. Check it out!

Yup, I have a B5 kit that is about that age and it has both J99s and Hipshot bridge.

I may be in the minority, but I love the J99s. They always cut through in the mix and sound great.

I have no problem with the tone of the J99's. In fact, they sound awesome, just enough low end grunt without being overbearing, and I find them very responsive to both hard and soft attack. My issue is with the typical single coil noise that I get with them. The bass is well sheilded already, the control cavity from Carvin is lined with copper foil, and carvin used sheilded signal wire from the pup's to the control circuit. I checked the continuity of the sheilding to ground and that's o.k. too.

If i use both P'ups full on, the hum is barely noticable, but if i roll off either volume pot, I start to get noise. So I'll end up pulling them out and putting noiseless jazz pickups in. I have a fender aerodyne P/J bass and it suffered from horrible noise; but its controls had no sheiding whatsover. When I had the work done on that bass, I installed Dimarzio pups and I'm very happy with them; so I figures i'll go with what i know. Besides they are local. Its good to support local industry when it makes sense to do so.

That is how just single coil pickups work. That said, my Carvin with J99s is quieter than any other single coil J equipped bass I've owned. Same for the J99As in my Icon.

Yep, I know; which is why I'm planning on replacing them with the dimarzio Area J's.

the level of buzz I pick up is intolerable. We have about 7 or 8 wireless mic's and the recivers are all close by, plus its an old buidling with a very noisy lighting circuit.

My Stingray is the first bass I've had that didnt need electrical massaging in order to make it playable at the church.

I have the inventory ticked from when teh original buyer ordered the bass, it has J99 pups. He ordered it on September 10, 2001...the evening just prior to the WTC attack.

Well im stoked, I think I found a really good deal on this bass right here. The fella had it made from Carvin custom shop. What exactly does that mean, im not sure. But its very clean and in about an hour I will be driving to play it and buy it. I got a very good deal.

Well I guess I oughta join the club and get a number?

Been playing guitar for years but just picked up my first bass rig a few weeks ago - Icon 5 string (ordered through custom shop) + bx500 + brx10.2. Been reading up here and watching youtube videos to figure out how to play it and so far it's been a blast!

Hello ladies and gents! I just received my LB75WP a few days ago. This IS THE BASS i've been looking for, I love it! I have been playing the Ibanez SR705 in the pic and it's alright, but this Carvin...............Woooooo! I don't have alot'a chops built up yet but Dayum!........ it plays so well that it actually motivates me to play more. The Piezo bridge pickup whiz-bang thingy..........Awsome! :bassist:. I must say, it really sounds good through the Ampeg cab if u blend it in just right.

Can I have a number Please! :D

Here's my Icon 5, new this year in June. Got the radiused Bromberg single coils. I just love this bass. I turned up the gain by a quarter turn. Great sustain and string to string balance.

I'd like to hear what an Carvin Icon with J99A pickups sounds like. I own a Carvin Icon 6-string with the SP humbucker soapbars and I'm less than thrilled with the tone -- it's very dull/sterile and not very deep. Can you please record and post some direct-in sound clips?
