Basically going to copy/paste from the Carvin boards.
So this came in last Thursday and I've been too busy playing it to take pictures. It sounds great so far although I haven't messed around enough yet with the electronics. It sounds great and is very very easy to play. So far I'm really excited!
I'm kind of torn on the satin matte finish I got -- I really like it but now I wonder what the tung oil would have been like. The matte is nice but I think the oil would give more life to the grain on the walnut.

I think you made a good choice. You have a smooth finish, like oil, but with more protection. I don't think oil would make the grain pop out more, for that gloss would be the way to go.
Congrats on your new Icon (love that walnut). I have to say that mine is also very playable.
I agree. I made the same choice on my IC5PW. I was at the factory so I got see all the different finishes in person and I thought the matte was the way to go.
For something like Legend_'s bass, I think the tung was a better choice since it's a all one block of wood.

The icon is outstanding by my estimation so far. I'd say the best part of it is the playability, followed by looks, followed by sound.

That Icon is a thing a beauty. I am thinking like a 35" scale 5 string for my next one.

What do you all think of the neck thru body versus bolt neck or set neck?
I have heard some poo poo the neck thru and I can't figure out why.
It must be the purist " the only real bass is a jazz whatever copy" crowd.
Any thoughts?

Since I didn't know there was an amp club when I started this, I am giving numbers to both bass and amp owners in this club. I guess the old numbers from the amp club will just need to stay as a separate club.

Walnut body and neck , BEM , black hardware , tung oil , HB , rounded body and lefthanded.

Alder body and maple neck , fretless with fret lines , Piezo option with two H50s ( special request at that time ). Pearl White finish ( not avalaible anymore ).
What I heard is because neck thru is in one piece glue to the body ... if the neck wrap , then the whole bass is garbage. If the neck of your Fender wrap ... just buy a new neck. And I discovered that Fender type of guy love simplicity and to modify their bass a lot. This isn't something you see with neck-thru.
Satin matte is subtle and classy. But if you want the 3D effect of all that figuring, you need a gloss finish. Carvin must have a great source for walnut. I've seen some really beautiful tops coming out of the factory - tops rivaling anything I've seen come out of boutique shops. I'm having a GAS attack.
