I know of some other on here that have some of Devon Smullen basses on here so I figured I would get started with a official club. I have owned alot of boutique quality basses from Roscoe, Warriors, STR, Ristola, Benavente, Lakland's, Prestige Ibanez, Custom Shop Bacchus and others and these are the best I've had in my hands. So lets see them folks. Here is the 3 I've purchased this year alone. I will take #1 if you guys don't mind lol.

I traded a Fender American Deluxe 5 for my Devon. It was built before he incorporated the tilt back headstocks. Great B string & I love the rolled edge fretboard. She’s one of the most comfortable 35” scale basses I’ve ever played (I generally prefer 34’s). I was very attracted to the weight (light), beautiful quilt top, & the overall tone. The recessed knobs & the true bolt on (threaded inserts) neck are a nice touch!

@thirtyhz

Pics doesn’t do that Spalt Maple justice. Best bass I’ve owned to date as far as looks, build, and play ability. The tone is great but I have my favorite ouckupnbwing custom built by Carey at Nordstrand in DC pups in MM she’ll. Bass will be perfect then.

I’ve probably played and owned as many as anyone as I currently have my 6 and 7th Custom Devon being made right now. When comparing them to my other (roughly 40-55) boutique high end basses in the $3500 and up to $6500 range, they are by far the best I’ve played. I compare them to Roscoe, Warrior, MTD, Lakland, Ristola, STR, Bacchus Woodline, Prestige Ibanez and many more they are better at every level. The attention to detail, playability and tone is what sets them apart. I’ve sold 2 to a friend in North Carolina that is a professional musician and has Fodera and NYC Sadaowsky’s. He said “these basses blow me away, they are better than my $12-$14k handmade Fodera’s. Man it is absolutely unreal that you get a bass at the prices he charges. He treats everyone like a friend to as each bass gets his personal touch only. I couldn’t recommend them enough. Here is my 2 Devon builds being finished as we speak. Both of these will be the new Gen5 smaller body style and 34’ scale.

Pretty basses but I do like fretboard markers. How can I see one of these in person? I didn't attend the show. I just checked out the website. I don't see all options available on the design page but assume Devon will try to accommodate requests like other pickup options, coil tap switching and fretboard inlays. I've always been a fan of the tilted headstock and 0 fret. To my ears string retainers have an undesirable impact an instruments resonance. Also, it can make the first fret hard to play when the strings arch over the nut from too much downward pressure.

He is the best I’ve seen at taking on any options or electronics to fit what the customer wants. You simply can’t find a better value IMO. He’s working on getting his website updated to accommodate all the options he offers such as inlays and the woods he has on hand. It’s best to email or call him and discuss because he has some unbelievable wood on hand that doesn’t show up on his site.
