MFRStop... you owe us the Big Al review son!
I walked into GC Boston the other day & they have a 25th HSS on the wall. Wow, haven't been able to try em b4. What fantastic fit & finish, neck, weight, electronics.
Didn't care for the tone though. Don't get me wrong, its not bad it just didn't WOW me like I thought I would be for a 2K bass. The Bongo wows me. The Sterling HH with the rear pickup in the sweet spot and 5 pickup selector wows me. The passive tone also wasn't that different either. A passive J tone knob changes are drastic. Its more subtle on the HSS.
I used a Mesa M9 & Powerhouse 410 cab. Id like to hear it through the Streamliner \ Epifani... a warmer amp would help.
Just sharing thoughts, not a review not enough time with it.
Hey Tuna...ya that's right!
Been nutso busy since I picked up the Al.
Have not put much time into playing it honestly.
But from what I can tell it is ALL the bass people on TB have said it is!
I love the look of the bass.
And the all buttons up setting is for sure SWEEEEEET as everyone has said....
The 18V bongo pre amp kicks major tail as does the Bongo.
I really like having the 18V hanging around waiting to be pushed in....hahaha!! It is like having nitrous on a hot rod....when ya need it BAM ya got it!!
But the passive sound the SSS puts out is beautiful...I can see myself playing it in passive for something more mellow and thumpy here and there.
Hard to compare the EBMM basses.
They all seem so different in so many ways...
I guess this has a lot in common with my Reflex HSS.
But the neck seems a bit thinner.
This is my first experience playing the thin Sterling style neck that comes on the AL.
It is great!! Now when I go from that to a Stingray it is a strrrretch.
I can see myself at some point selling off something here and there to obtain 2 more Big Al's possibly?
This one is rosewood...would be cool to have one with the maple and one with ebony.
Maybe a white one with matching HS and Maple board, pearloid pg?
Maybe a black one with matching headstock and ebony board and flat black pg?
Too bad EBMM has done away with so many of their awesome colors. Takes a lot of incentive out of ordering new from them.
I think EBMM should follow G&L's lead and allow you to order any of the models in any of the colors....G&L has a ton of amazing colors you can have on all of their models.
If they did THAT, there would be MUCH more incentive for me to lay down an order and buy new , rather than always be looking for that needle in the haystack color used that I want. That they have not offered in like 6 years...or whatever.
ok ...... sorry for the novel
