There's two vids of it on YouTube, albeit not the best music. The six has completely taken over as my main bass- my beloved buckeye five has been in its case for nearly three months now. Hopefully I'll be able to get some new vids up sometime soon.

Greetings all. . . I may be one of the earliest Elrick owners on TB, having bought my first one back in '98 or '99, I can't remember which. It was the single cut, maple burl top, pink ivorywood board fretless 5 that Bryan had for a while. I actually owned the maple burl/cocobolo 6 he had too (sold to Brad who, I believe, sold to Bryan). I then owned that amazing NJS cherryburst with the Demeter/Aero set-up. That bass was A-L-I-V-E! I sold it to cat in Colorado, who I believe sold it to Lokire.

Anyway, I moved away from them basically on a GAS quest, searching for basses and they somehow got lost in the abyss. Then I battled with tendinitis for a while which caused me to move back to 34 in scale basses exclusively.

All this to say, of all the basses I've owned, the three most comfortable from a body ergonomics standpoint, and playability (in no particular order) are Fodera, Elrick, Groove Shoppe 5. This says something huge about the value of Rob's basses (and the GS basses for that matter). It actually pains me a bit that they take such a hit on resale. Except when I find a good deal on one. . . :D

So, I'm back with Elrick and am going to pick this up from Brian in Nashville sometime hopefully in the next couple of weeks.

Now, Rob definitely makes some basses that are right up there with Vinnie as far as artistic beauty. This ain't one of them, but it's classy and from what I understand, it's a workhorse. So, if anyone knows of a nice Elrick fretless for sale, send me a PM. :bassist:

That one was killer...I wish I had picked it up when it was at Bass NW.

That fretless and the cocobolo six were both great basses- sold them both as I prefer the e-volution style a lot more (they were both Classics) and I wanted shorter scale lengths, but even way back then Rob was making great instruments.

Hey...that singlecut Elrick fretless with the pink ivory, maple burl and Aeros was MY bass! I oredered that from Rob after playing his basses at NAMM in 97 or 98...don't remember now. So, I guess that makes ME the earliest Elrick member on TB! :D Now...when does someone send me a free bass as a first place trophy?

Hey Matt! How goes it? PM comin' atcha! Yeah, I still remember the conversation we had about that bass over the phone. It's funny how things stick out in your mind... like selling my Fodera Emperor right around that time, and feeling sick about it afterward. :rollno:

I also remember the morning FedEx brought it, I pulled it out and thought, "Holy crap, he was exactly right about this thing!"

So, I picked up the Gold Series 5 from Brian - what a freaking slammin' bass. It saddens me a little (and baffles me a lot) that Rob's work does not retain its value better on the used market. This bass was a STEAL, and, having been so long since I've owned one of his basses I am even more in awe of the quality. This thing is pretty beaten up (which I don't mind, proves it's been played a fair amount), but Rob's build quality and attention to detail is undeniable. I've owned a number of "boutique" basses since owning his, many of which were much more expensive than this one and yet did not have nearly the inherent quality.

Ok, so, this should see some gigging time pretty soon. It's got old, dead strings on it, and probably hasn't seen a set-up in a while, and yet it plays and sounds like a champ, neck is almost perfectly straight. I may give it a little treatment and will definitely give it a fresh set of strings, but wow, Rob's work is right up there.

So, anyone have an Elrick fretless 5, and an Elrick 6 they want to move?

This may have been covered already, but have any of you guys tried Rob's strings? Are they hand-wound in house, or do they come from a distributor? Life? I need to get some stainless for this beast. . .

P.S. Majestic, that freaking bass is MAJESTIC! Is that the curly ash? Simply amazing. . . put me on the list if you ever decide to sell! :eek:

I use Rob's strings on my fretted Elrick e-volution 5 and my Stambaugh 5. I love them. Mine are nickel rounds with (I think) a hex core. They have an even tonal balance up and down the fretboard and string to string, and for me are easy to play. They seem to last a long time but I'm probably not one to make judgments on this issue. I like it when my rounds lose that zing they have when new. I believe that he has them made by a famous string manufacturer but he keeps 'whom' a secret. Check out his string myspace page. :)

Thanks for the info! I like Hi-Beams, mostly because the new uberzing fades to a nice bright but warm and punchy tone with plenty of definition and it stays there a while. I'm not a fan of the razor sharp to flatwound thing that a lot of strings do. I like that initially bright new period to give way to something with plenty of bite, but more warmth. I know Lo-Riders have the hex core, whereas Hi-Beams or round. We'll see, might be worth a try. I do like the higher tension that hex cores provide.

I will put you on the list.......but you might not want to hold your breath!:rollno: Thank you for your kind words, though. The top is curly/quilted northern white ash and the body is flamed swamp ash. I love this bass.....and that B-string absolutely kicks you in the chest! So articulate.

I use Rob's stainless strings on my basses and love them. One of the best strings I've ever played. I know the history of how and who developed these strings and they are unlike any other private label string out there. Rob was kept in the process the whole time over a period of many, many months. I haven't tried the nickels, but I have heard great things out them also.

Here's a bass I just picked up. It's nice. I don't really like Elrick's, love the looks but most everyone I've played sounded terrible. His basses are just too light to sound good and get a nice natural lowend. Thankfully this bass has a little weight to it. I doubt it would work very well in a rock or country band but I didn't buy it for that. The upper registers are very sweet.
