Strings are Cleartones. It's stated in the FAQ located here: http://www.espguitars.com/pages/faq I actually like them for roundwounds.

I've replaced the Ltd preamp in my BT-4Z with an Aguilar OBP-3 and am very excited by the change. I've kept the Ltd pickups and they pair with the new pre very well.

I played lots of Ibanezes, Schecter, and Fender/Squire, all in the same general price point and
only the used MIM Fender P bass or a new Fender Dimension were even close as far as tone options and overall quality.

Nice. I recently bought my first Ltd guitar, it's a Jeff Hanneman JH600EC. A real superb instrument, so good that I'm selling my Ibanez Prestige. Nothing wrong with the Ibanez, I just find the neck on the slightly deep U neck on the ESP suits me more than the flat neck on the Ibanez.

I bought an LTD Vintage 214. Love the sound and versatility. Not too crazy about the wide neck and weight. I probably won't post a pic since my plan is to use the pickups in something else and see if some of that wonderful tone can be reproduced in a lighter bass with faster neck.
These are well made basses and I think they will gain in popularity. I would never have known they existed if it weren't for a youtube post.

Awesome, I love mine - I think they crap on the Squiers at a similar price point.

The neck is 40mm wide, which is the exact middle between a jazz and P width so I'm not sure how you can say that it has a wide neck. It is actually one of the features of the bass that I like the most. A great compromise.

Interesting. Mine measures 1-5/8" which is P bass width according to the Fender site. Regardless, it isn't comfortable for me to play and I feel like I'm slowed down by it. I prefer the Ibanez necks for size and comfort.

I've played some nice Squiers but the LTD is a tone beast and a step up from most Fender style basses. I owned a '69 P for many years and I prefer the LTD tone by a long shot. To me, most basses that have both P and J pickups sound better at one than the other. The LTD has two very distinctly different sounds and both are wonderful.

I read somewhere that ESP was originally a parts manufacturer that didn't get into building instruments until later in their history and they entered that arena as a boutique company. I think their pickups reflect that. They sound like someone spent a lot of time on them.

I really like the electronics that ESP put into my bass as well, some sort of Jett Circuit they call it. It's awesome.

I love my P/J and it was great from the factory. However, once I changed out the pots and rewired it like a standard P/J it really opened up. Their wiring was way different than the standard schematic Duncan has for a P/J. Anyway, that's for a passive bass. I've yet to try an active P/J or any active bass from ESP though.

In regards to neck widths, nut width is only part of the story. I have a B4-B, the nut width is Jazz size, 1.5", but the fretboard width is narrower, there's about 1/16" less on the outside edges (forces good technique, LOL). That combined with a thicker back to front dimension is what I like about the neck. I much prefer it to my Jazz.

Wow! I've never heard of that. All of mine have the nut width the same as the fretboard.

Just to be clear, the fretboard is the same as the nut, at the top of the neck, but it is slimmer as it goes to the base of the neck, relative to a Jazz neck.

The nut and the bridge spacing is the same on both basses, but the width at the twelfth fret is 2 1/4" on the Jazz and 2 1/8" on the B4.
