I've been pretty content with just my h9, but once I Max it out I know I'll want another one. I think I'll put my M9 up for sale an use the cash to grab an m5 and h9 core.

Fun pedal so far. I only have the core (26 settings) because I bought it used and I guess it wiped when they deregistered it and set up my account.
So far, it seems more suited for guitar. I'm looking for the preferred bass algorithms before I buy anything. The 5-minute try option in the store is great too.
I'm not a big effects guy. I have a BassPod that I use sometimes and a VT Bass Deluxe that I have used in live sets.
I took a break from gigging (too much going on right now) but I do find time to practice and try new things now.
This H9 is promising.

I'd have to buy 15 algos at $19.99 each. That's almost $300. Most of the effects I get from it are really great for guitar, but not bass. I only dabble with guitar.
I was hoping to buy the ones that were really suited for bass, but I don't know which yet.
Either way, get deals on itunes cards so you can save 15-20%+ on algorithms you do buy. I think you can try the algorithms for a limited time too, so it helps to choose. But, there are SO MANY
I'm not sure why you say this. The "meat and potatoes" effects are in there. But, the H9 can be so much more. You don't need an H9 for a bar gig but you can use it on one. As I only use one effect at a time, my pedalboard is down to an H9, a distortion box and an volume pedal.
As far as apply an H9 effect to bass, IMHO, if the effect has a blend (wet/dry) control, it can be used on bass. And all the effects on the H9 I've come across has a blend control.

I happen to agree with @ZuluFunk that many of the algorithms are better on guitar. It's not just about having a wet/dry blend. A lot of the Pitchfactor algorithms are very "dense" and your bass just doesn't "breathe" the same way a guitar does. I have lots of fun with them on both instruments, but live, I use them on guitar a lot more.
Having said that, if you tweak the settings properly, I'm sure you can get a lot of stuff that's very useful on bass.

Having a reverb is nice, but sometimes muddies up the bass in a mix so I have to be selective there. Delays are fun if used properly. Chorus, flanger, phaser, octaver are almost always useful.

You want Crystals (Pitchfactor) and Harmodulator (PF) full stop.
Chorus (from Modfactor) or Micropitch (PF) are both good chorus sounds. H910/H949 (PF) is a great modulated delay. Undulator (MF) is an interesting delay/reverb. The Tremolo (MF) is good.
Everything else, it depends on what you want---phaser, flanger, whammy (Pitchflex from PF), etc.

I think it's all dependent on the type of bass you play as well. I mean let's be honest, crystals doesn't really work in most musical context other than swallowing every note you play and making it sound like what the stomp box wants it to sound like. There's no definition to it without a expression pedal, yet it's a favorite of many many people. It literally kills your low end at 100% wet, but I LOVE IT.
I will also note, to make sure you set your H9 to bass as the instrument. You've got to look in the manual to do this. It's a pain in the ass the first time going through that stupid tree. UGH. But once you get the hang of it, there's nothing to it.
I have yet to find any preset on any algo I didn't say "man this is shaging awesome" in some way. They're all good IMO.

Setting your H9 for bass input source is especially important for the pitchfactor stuff I find. It really does help quite a bit.

I don't know which algorithm I'm going to use my coupon for, but one of the primary reasons I got this is because I want a harmonizer, one where I can actually pick the intervals. The diatonic has two, and the quadravox has four... would it be more useful to get the quadravox, as I could make thicker sounds?
Also, any suggestions for good ambient drone type stuff (esp. on the ones it comes with?)

Diatonic has mor options for the controlling the delay ed harmonies than quadravox. Both are great though and useful in their own ways. I'll run the quadravox with no delay into a wet reverb to get pad like sounds.

Another question for y'all. Going through some of the info and such, they've added a compressor and the resonator algorithm, and I seem to think I read that they added them to the pedal. Does it come with either of those, or do they need to be bought?

When they release new algorithms they are only free for a limited time, so you have to purchase them after their initial release. The good news for you is that all future releases will be free to you.
