The Lace P-pickup is pretty generic sounding, not much character. The piezos sound good, rich and punchy. It has the aftermarket buffer board installed, which makes a HUGE difference when using the piezo. I've had it for nearly twenty years, but only had a few chances to play it along with other people. I once had a chance to jam with a conga player and a guy with a high-quality electric nylon-string guitar, and the combination of sounds was gorgeous.

Regarding Japanese instruments, I also have a Strat XII, which is really nice; and a Gretsch Tennessee Rose, which is a SPECTACULAR guitar in every respect.

I love these basses! There was a sunburst for sale in Japan recently. I think they were asking 100000 Yen. It was in great condition. I am holding out for one of these but the "Fender Custom Edition" version. Does yours have the Custom Edition sticker on the back of the headstock? Just curious. Beautiful bass. Thanks for posting this.

Got this Fender MB5 a few months ago. Not much of a story but I was in the market for a jazz or PJ bass and was zeroing in on another MIJ bass, a Fender P Bass Lyte but then this popped up on Marketplace. I saw this as an opportunity to give five string basses another go and still get a jazz style bass. I knew it was light 7lb 6 oz if I remember correctly, and has a very narrow fretboard width for a five string so yes, knew what to expect and decided to opt for it instead. Well, glad I took a gamble on it as it really satisfies my admittedly narrow criteria for a suitable five string I can live with. It also has a darker tone than your typical jazz, so really somewhere between a jazz and a p bass, neck feels great and the narrowness of the neck doesn't bother me at all. I play a lot of funk and don't have a problem with slapping on it with strings that close together. Great 5 string bass imo.

Haven't really thought about why that is, but I guess perhaps it's because I view the concept of marriage as being more about the recipe than the ingredients; you may have chocolate icing, or you may have vanilla icing, but it's still a cake. If cake doesn't work out for me I'm not gonna keep eating other cakes until I find one I like, Imma go eat some vegetables.

Yikes that is a lovely instrument. So there is a Fender Japan area of TB. Who knew? Say, I've got one of those. Where's that camera?

50s hybrid Precision (with me only for a week):

Long story short: Bought it used from a very nice chap, and was happy with the deal (this bass rocked!). The seller, though, contacted me a week later that he regretted letting it go and asked whether he could buy it back (covering my expenses, plus adding a few bonus coins). Since I already had a more than decent P-bass, and this was the seller’s only electric bass, I went along with the ‘redistribution’. The seller’s happiness made it worthwhile. And I guess that this P gets more playing time than I could have given it.

That was a very nice thing for you to do. I think most of us have at least one bass we regret selling. The world could use more people like you.
