Just bought a Fernandes MB80 Bass (made from 89-93), it's a Mockingbird copy, but I don't plan on changing the "F" on the headstock. Fernandes is an amazing company that endorses some great artists, both in the states and elsewhere

Fernandes Guitars is an amazing guitar manufacturer, and on their official website, you can get AMAZING models for deeply discounted prices. Still waiting on a Vortex Bass being available somewhere, but until then, this new bass will have to do

Most Fernandes guitars are hard to come by. If you look at ebay, the most reliable place to get them, you'll see several models are readily available. However, other models, specifically the GOOD ones, are near impossible to find outside Japan and Russia, for some reason. I'm sure if you contact the company, they'll give you a good list of retailers, and where to get certain models you can't get on their website.

I've recently purchased a Fernandes gravity 5x and it sounds totally awesome. For a passive bass, it has nice punchy sound. I once owned this bass a few years ago and I do miss owning it. And now that I bought it once again, it's staying in my arsenal. This bass is a keeper.

Questions for all the Fernandes folks out there: I have 2 Fernandes basses: a P-from 1996 (RPB-380?) and a Jazz from '97 (RJB etc etc)?, as per the date stamp on the neck heel. Both have the black logo and the eagle beak headstock. Are they made in Korea or Taiwan? Or somewhere else? Also, what kind of pickguards can I use for replacement purposes? The standard ones don't line up! I'll toss some pictures up here when I can have access to a decent camera, and grab my number (if those are still being distributed).

My,my,my. That looks like a fine guitar. But while we can all admire the build quality, playability and value most Fernandes instruments represent, that does open up a whole other can of worms….LOL

It looks to be an early 90's SWB-75, a quick search didn't pinpoint the year but you may be able to dig it out with a little effort. See this link to start:

Thanks for the link, I think its the SWB-75. I changed the pickups on mine to an active Basslines PJ set. The bridge is starting to get a bit brittle probably because of age. I'm planning on upgrading to high mass. Any bridge recommendations?

I once used a BadAss (II or III, can't remember now) but it was on a Fender and the mounting holes matched perfectly. Matching the mount would be my first consideration, to avoid having to drill or re-drill the body, then choose from the ones that passed that test. The BA was a quality piece of gear FWIW.

Got it! Thank you so much for your replies. I will start her "beastification" as soon as the parts are available. I'll probably put an aguilar obp2 in her just to spice things up a bit. Thanks!

At the suggestion of someone who saw a thread I posted about my Rickenbacker replica (or would it be a tribute?), here's my 1996 or 1997 (likely '97, as the paperwork date translates to "9th year of Emperor so-and-so..." like they do their calendars) Japan-market-only RB-90, bought there at a shop in Osaka in '97. It is a 99% TWIN for the Ric 4003. Neck-through, stereo input jack, Gotoh tuners, amazing quality bass that plays as well... if not better (gasp!)... than the real thing.

That is spectacular. I especially like that they added "Inc" to the brand so the number of letters came out the same as "Rickenbacker" LOL

I have three Fernandes guitars. One is a copy of a Fender 51' Telecaster. It has been hot-rodded with Fender Texas Special pickups and a ashtray bridge cover. The other two are "lawsuit" copy basses. One is a copy of Jaco Pastorius' fretless Fender Jazz bass and the other is a copy of Billy Sheehan's Fender 'wife' bass. The two basses were picked up when I was stationed in Japan during the 1980's. Cheers. ;^D.
