I haven't played the British either. I just know the American gives me the best clean tone I have had so far. And then when you crank the gain it's an awesome dirt box too!

I have both - British I am running as a clean tone shaper, American as dirt grit, the American is running into the British, then to a ART Studio MP. I really like both as a clean tone box, the American gets the edge for dirt IMO, but not by heaps. Both have a good flavor.
Having both, I would go along with this description. They're quite close but I would say the British stands out in a live mix a little more.
I'm getting ready to put my British in the classifieds because I was looking for 'smoother' as opposed to 'crunchy' and found it in the American. Let me know if you're interested.
Yesterday I tryed the UD as a clean bosst with my tribute band. Gain all the way down , tone at 12 o'clock , volume between 2 and 3 o'clock and the switch in low mode. Excellent.
I ran my Ultimate through my Mesa rig and it sounded great. I set it at a low to medium gain and used some active mid cut and got a great tone for metal with my Spector. I used it with the OD channel with a G&L L2000 for the fun of it and I had too much distortion going on. I like this pedal a lot and as an OCD clone, it's great.
I tried my UD and American with a jazz bass and boy did it give a different sound. My usual bass is a custom all through with a Music Man pickup and 3 band active EQ (usually flat) and the tonal difference and clarity was very different with the passive Jazz bass. I think I'll need a lot of tweeking to the American to find the sound I like again with that particular bass. It just goes to show that pedals are very effected by the source bass. It also shows me how important post EQ is for dirt pedals.
The British IMO, is every bit as good for bass as the American. They're very similar, just a different voicing if that makes any sense.

Wow really? Now I understand why people have been raving about it being so versatile. No im getting visions of it being stacked with some fuzzes to really give not so used fuzzes some versatility. This I got to see.
The voice is a midrange control which acts before the drive. The more you boost it, the more the drive will be in the high mids.

Wait, how could it be used with other pedals? I thought it would only control the drive on the pedal itself.
Oh so if it comes before the drive then if you only have the drive set to real minimal then the voice knob wouldn't have much of a drastic effect im guessing
Don't have the pedal myself so can't say it would do anything at all. But initially I figured for those that used it as more of a boost or tone shaper feeding that into, say a fuzz, you can mess with the voice knob and while stacking give your fuzz more of a tonal range. Going from ticol07's post above, if your not really pushing the drive on it, maybe that won't be the case now. Still for the sake of experimentation, which is what we pedal geeks are about right?, worth a shot to see how things work out stacking it with say a fuzz you don't get much tonal range out of.
The voice control still has a very drastic effect on the overall tone regardless of how much drive is present. I can't remember exact details, but its something like turning clockwise boosts around 800-1k Hz and cuts 400 Hz, counterclockwise does the opposite.
Using these pedals after other fuzz/overdrive pedals works wonderfully. You can very much change the voicing of other pedals, my ultimate drive sounds amazing into the American set clean with a boost in the low mids.

I have some pedals that sound better bass--»dirt--»American--»amp. And some sound better bass-->American--> dirt--> amp.
It's all subjective to your likes anyways, but this is exactly why my board arrangement changes every few weeks.
