+1. Yeah...I'd email him or Leo...I'm sure they will get back to you. The Lakland guys are great, and this seems very unusual.

I've emailed brian 2-3 times since January about the DJs, among other things. I just never get any info or acknowledgment about the basses. I've had great service with Lakland and Brian before, but just not in regards to my US DJs.

It would've been nice for them to inform Beaver at Bass Central about the oversight so he could inform me. I know they're busy, but that's part of their customer service. I'm not ragging on Lakland, you all know I love their basses and service. I just felt the need to vent my frustration in this regard.

I generally prefer email because this allows them to respond at a convenient time instead of dropping what they're in the middle of doing. At this point, I know the deal after being informed by a fellow LOGger. I just had to vent after seeing people were getting pictures taken/sent, etc. and I didn't even get a response to my inquiry after a few emails.

It's all good now, I've vented.

Well, after last night's gig and some more experimenting I discovered two things: In most cases, the 44-02 in full-range mode (all pickups, all coils on, preamp FLAT) with older strings was simply too dark. I discovered it really wasn't the amp to a large degree, for better or worse. The mids weren't the problem really, it was the lack of treble response from the bass. In a big room, the definition and attack was getting lost. Solution? Boosting the onboard treble control helped immensely, then tweaking the amp from there. Also, I discovered that my particular 44-02 sounded very thin and nondescript in the mix with the light gauge strings I was using. I put a set of medium-gauge strings on this morning and got everything tweaked, and it's like a brand new bass was born. The funny thing is that my 44-01s and 55-01s all respond better with light gauge strings. I think the mediums help to tighten things up more with this bass, especially since it's a good 1.5 lbs lighter than any of my -01s. The 44-02 weighs in around 9 or 9.5 lbs. Has anyone else run into situations where a certain gauge just flat out doesn't work on a particular bass, Laklands in particular? I'm really stoked because now this bass really feels and sounds like I know it should... I can't believe I went for this long with it sounding 'off' to my ears with the other strings.

i find this very interesting cause after posting about eq'ing, i too thought maybe its time to try some different strings.

what kind of strings do you use? can you tell me the gauges of your lites vs. med's?

i am actually thinking of going to...(gasp)...

roundwounds.

not to sidetrack tooo much, but along with string gauges that make the -02's happy, what's the preference for roundwounds here?

Well, I've always been a GHS guy... I started using GHS strings from the time I started playing, mainly because my friend/mentor Jason Scheff had/has been a longtime GHS endorser (not sure what he uses these days honestly). We emulate those we admire in the beginning, no? Well, the choice stuck... I found that the overall feel and the types of strings GHS offers has fit well with my sonic visions as they've progressed and matured over the years. With that said, I now use Lakland Custom Wounds pretty much exclusively, and was pleased to know that GHS makes these strings for them. Anyway, I use light gauge nickel rounds on my 44 and 55-01 series basses, and just slapped a set of medium gauge nickel rounds on the 44-02. I do have one 44-01 set up with medium gauge JO Flats that I love as well. The gauges on the mediums are 45-65-85-105, with 40-60-80-100 being the gauges on the lights. Again, for some reason the -01's seem to like the light gauges pretty well, and the -02 came alive with the mediums. I never use Stainless Steel for two reasons... way too zingy, way too hard on frets. I like the mellow subtleness that nickel lends. I realize this is subjective... now let's debate maple vs. rosewood! haha.

I have tried D'Addario and RotoSound strings in the past, but they never sounded as good to me as what I had found with GHS. I could have experimented more, but that would take a lot of $$ and time I don't have. I might take a shot at some DR's sometime though, after hearing a lot of folks swear by them.

Evan, this thread should be a place where people can vent when they need to--there's no "rah-rah all the time" requirement, IMO, despite what some say about club threads.. And I think you have every right to be frustrated.

If you feel like everything's squared away now, that's cool. I do need to catch up with Leo about something and plan on calling him Monday. If you need any additional info, let me know and I'll pass it on to Leo.
