Funny how the DJ and JO have diff spacings. I guess that explains the mass confusion regarding the DJ spacing, regardless of Dan confirming it as a sort of 60's position.

Man, can't wait to see your sonic blue. When's the estimated finish date on that one again? Yours probably being the very first DJ to sport huge humbuckers for pickups, it would help tremendously to get an idea of how they look in RL (the mockups so far are just a bit lacking..)
And it's gonna be active, too? Talk about taking "modern" to the next level... :eek:

On another note, I was considering for a moment getting a dual-coil in the bridge position. I do prefer the fatter 60's placement for bridge-only Jaco-ing.
But I see that Markus has confirmed the Single mode for the Buckers aren't as boomy as the pure singles. Can't afford to have that, so two pure singles it is, then. Just as E. had already recommended...


Now to confirm the aesthetics. Thanks for the Danny Forster pic again, E. :D Those do look massively huge, just as I had feared. They seem bigger than the neck pocket!
Well anyways, here's the drastic changes the pickups will give:
Which version looks these look best to you guys, regardless of what I'm planning on doing?

One thing's for sure: I will be missing the kempt, almost retro look of the stock bass...
Still, the huge Chi's are starting to grow on me, if even a little bit. First thing that pops into my mind is "Robocop."

if i find a DJ or JO, i think i'm going to have it refinished by that wilkins shop...if you send them a bare body, they don't charge the extra fee that would be charged for disassembly and reassembly.

then i have to rewire the proto, i think. i'm not sure if i'm going to leave it with the pre or go passive switchable. i like the versatility of the passive tone knob, but i don't like how it affects the sound in the active mode, too. i feel like i'm never getting the true tone of the pups because of that stinkin passive tone knob. it's definitely going to come out and probably a switch put in it's place a la 55-94.

This will all happen by this weekend, since i'm also waiting for some major hardware pieces finished in black (bridge, tuners, string tree/bar, etc.) i still have to order a switch for it, too, but i'm waiting on a wiring diagram from kirk@lakland.

Yeah...I wouldn't put the DJ through the surgery if it were me. Too much work on a Skyline in my opinion. I'd just save up and order one eventually. While you are waiting, you might realize the slight change isn't worth it in the long run. Adding more high mids doesn't get you close?

As for my own idea, which may seem a little neurotic, I'm convinced the slight change in location will make a great change in tone. Whichever mod I ultimately go with will be pretty drastic, so I want to choose the option that will never make me go, "Man, that's shoddy. Now I wanna sell it for a huge loss and buy a US model now."

The decision, then, should logically be installing the Chi's. But their inner workings aren't clear enough for me yet to signal the green light. The only other neodymium pickups I've seen, the Q-tuners, have so many lines of coils it'd be impossible to pinpoint a position for them.

Ack, all for that cliche "Marcus tone..." :rolleyes:

Sorry for being annoying with all this excessive overthinking. It's been so many years since my last visit to the US, and I want to get things down PAT when I go there this summer. I may not get the opportunity again for a while, and any mistakes/regrets will stick with me for too long...

Yeah...the top is smooth for sure. You would have to do a bit of EQing and add a touch of overdrive. Hard to comment for sure since I'm on vacation and away from my Laklands:bawl:

Tough to say. I have 2 basses with SC Chi's. But neither wear stainless steels strings, so that's gonna make it tough for me to chime in on Marcus' tone on the Chis.

I love the way these basses sound with nickels and flats. So I guess I prefer Markus' tone....:bassist:

Addition: That being said, I did MTD Stainless strings on the DJ5 w/an Audere, and it definitely had that high end poppy crunchiness (technical term). It's a cool tone, just not for me.
