Hmm. After reading all of this, I really took a closer look at mine. The binding on the upper horn is not smooth. What I mean is that I can slip a fingernail into where the binding meets the body. Also a white powder flakes out of the crack. There's the smooth binding, but right where it meets the body, it's kinda powdery.

Anyone else have this? Other than that, the bass is perfect and sound and feels great.

To those with more experience than I: should I return this? Is this a problem that will get worse?

Can anyone with visible body wing lines on their MID 4003 tell me if the lines can be felt as well as seen? Mine can clearly be felt; there small amount of depth to the lines, and it continues around the bottom of the body. While this is mainly on the back of the bass (I can see but not feel the lines on the headstock,) it's really starting to bother me. Considering that my bass is from March 2010, there are only 7 months of warranty left on the finish. At this point, I'd really be worried about getting a replacement for exchange - how many of these can MF possibly have left?

The only conspiracy is the state of this economy. The big picture is that a good amount of people here could crap out $1300 to grab a Ric on a whim and do it as a sound off "me too, ooooh, and it's a sale" club.

Not whinin', just sayin'. And it's not any deeper than that.

Mine is from March 2010 also. I can also feel the lines on the back.

I can VERY faintly see the join lines on mine on the body and the headstock. The neck..not so much. Certainly cannot feel them.

But, I have to say I have seen this on almost every solid color bass I have owned (more than I'm willing to admit!), and it is certainly more apparent on darker finishes like black and midnight blue. (...stops to look at Fender CIJ Jazzmaster...yes the lines are there too, more fainltly, but probably due to the thicker finish on the Fender).

Par for the course on an instrument made of wood (IMHO of course!). YMMV.

Anyone who's read any of the threads on Ric, should not be surprised at some of the issues raised. Ric's are amazing basses. I've never seen a perfect Ric, but they are amazing basses none the less.

Seeing the lines doesn't bother me, but being able to clearly feel them does. It makes me think that the pieces weren't glued together precisely or tightly enough and there was some separation before it was painted. Looking at it again, it's the joint down the middle between the two piece neck that stands out the most. I really hate to go through the hassle and gamble of exchanging this, but I'm worried about future problems plus the effect it would have on resale value if I ever decide to sell the bass in the future. As I mentioned in another post, the only other flaws are some tail lift and some excess glue on a short portion of the fingerboard. Anyone think I should exchange it?

I mentioned a binding issue on the upper horn. Right where it meets the body, there's a bit of a crack, enough to put a fingernail in; also there is a white flaky powder in the crack. It's a several inches long.

Have you heard of this? Is this something which will get worse?

Any advice would be appreciated.

I wouldn't worry about the binding seam. The white powder is just polishing compound. It tends to accumulate in corners and cavities. Open any truss cover or control cavity and you'll usually find some.

Please guys, theres no reason to fight. For those who didn't come here from the original thread, heres the story: dude put up a thread letting everyone know about the sale, and then started a list of 35 or so people who ordered. We moved the thread over to here, explicitly for the purpose of all the buyers comparing their new Rics to everyone elses, to really see the consistency of their quality or what issues are common. What you may see as "nitpicking" we see as details in a very unique experiment... out of a batch of ~35 basses sitting in a warehouse for a year, how many were flawless? How many had problems? What kind of problems?

Of course this thread is wide open to the whole population, and I can see how someone who spent $2000 on a Ric in the recent past could have a chip on their shoulder seeing us complain about minor problems when we only paid $1300. On one hand you could say "look at that discount, the $700 difference should make up for a few flaws". On the other hand, most of us never expected to ever OWN a Ric... my other basses were picked up for $300-$600 each. So, for US, this $1300 investment is the BIGGEST BASS PURCHASE we've ever made, and at the end of the day we're still spending $1300 on a very well known high reputation instrument, and we want that reputation to carry into the quality of our instrument. If they were selling these as scratch n dent, returns, blemished, etc. then that would be one thing, and you wouldnt see any nitpicking. But these are being sold as Brand New, still in factory packaging. They really should be PERFECT.... the value of a $2000 bass in a $1300 package.

Well said... even though I am very happy with mine and it appears to have no issues, I am a bit dissapointed in the Ric QC based on some of the things I've seen on this thread, and would be a bit pissed if my bass arrived with a crappy nut, touch-ups, chipping paint,etc... I mean, bottom line is that even though we all got great pricing, we still paid about $1,300 - which is A LOT of money. End of story.
