Official Orange Club II

AD arrived this morning.
It fits perfectly on the cabs. Sounds pretty killer.

I remember trying out an Isobaric 212 once and found that it sounded really good, but not loud at all. One of my GK NEO112's put out more volume than the Isobaric. But for tone, yeah it sounded really good.
As I get older and the back gets a little less reliable I've been seriously considering swapping out by SP410 for two SP212s, with the option of just taking one for small pub gigs. There is always the concern of volume loss though (my head is a Mk1 TB500), especially for larger functions. Are those cabs that much quieter than a standard 212?

Large discussion regarding isobaric cabinets.

I asked Orange directly regarding the features of such a cabinet. It appears that power handling, footprint/cabinet size and an increased articulation (relative to reduced properties leading to distortion) are the bonuses of the cabinet design. These seem to appear being marketed with the Terror Bass 500/1000 amps. There is only so much power a single 12" speaker can take. (Why there is not a 1000 watt 12" speaker available is an issue for others to address.) A small lunchbox size amp with 500 watts desires a small 600 watt speaker cabinet that sounds good if pushed.

Clearly, if shear volume is your goal, then a larger format 2x12" could potentially be a better way to go. But if portability, power capacity in a safe range and not distorting at higher volume is desired. Then an isobaric (constant pressure) design could be perfect.

Having used a V1 TB 500 with a 112 cabinet for a long time, I can definitely say there were enough instances where having more speaker surface area would have made a big difference. I have a pair of them now, for that exact reason, and that's my "big" rig, but for a single cab, I've opted for a 210. It's nearly double the speaker surface area and definitely pushes the sound of the amp more fully than either 112 on its own. All the speakers I'm comparing are rated for the same power handling, and *very* similar sensitivity, which I feel lends credence to what my ears are hearing.

Yes, they are that much quieter. As an example I stated that 1 GK NEO112 was louder than the Isobaric 212. Tone wise it was great, but it was not going to cut it for me volume wise. BTW those GK's are awesome little cabs. Plenty of volume and great sound.

If you are looking for tone and less weight maybe you could try the newer OBC112'S. Those get great reviews and I have been thinking about them for quite some time as well.

This really gives me something to think about.

I'd also appreciate some advice on using multiple cabs and volume levels. Are you actually getting any additional volume output were I to run two OBC112s? Also how does the ohmage work if I did that? Can I run them both at 8 ohms in parallel out the TB500 or do they need connecting in series?

I don't have a TB500, but anytime you run two 8 ohm cabs together (assuming in parallel), it makes a 4 ohm load, so you would set the amp or plug in the cabs accordingly. On an AD200 you can daisy chain 2 8ohm cabs and plug into either one of the "4 ohm" jacks, or plug one 8 ohm cab into one of the 4ohm jacks as long as you plug a 2nd 8 ohm cab into the other 4 ohm output jack. On the TB500, I'm guessing there is a switch?

Some amps with run at a lower wattage when there is an 8ohm load than when running at 4 ohms, so with 2x 8 ohm cabs (=4ohm), you may get the full 500w available as well as a 2nd speaker to push more air, so yes, definitely more volume.

Flip the switch on the amp to 4 ohms, plug in both cabs and rock it out. Doesn't matter if you connect both cabs to the amp or connect one cab to the amp and then to the other.

As @Mighty Thumb said, it doesn't matter if you run both cabs from both speakons on the amp or daisy chain them. Just set the switch to 4 ohms.

As a rule of thumb one 8 ohm cab = 8 ohms (duh), two 8 ohm cabs = 4 ohms, three 8 ohm cabs = 2.67 ohms and four 8 ohm cabs = 2 ohms.

Don't need to over think it from there and yes more speakers equal more volume as long as they are not Isobaric because in that instance, one speaker is behind the other and not able to push any air.

Used to have a TB and there's no switch on it as I recall. It has two speakon outputs and a class D power amp.
Just connect your cabs either a speakon each or one speakon on the head and daisy chain on the cab. The amp adapts its power output accordingly.
It is not recommended to have a lower impedance than 4 Ohm as to not strain the transformer.
You can however safely run the amp without load, effectively running at infinite impedance.
I know the manual says otherwise, but that's a printing error.
