Official Tobias Club

My two tobias guitars...not basses...but hey, most guitar players aren't hip to these anyway...

Wow, how cool is that? I didn’t know Mike ever made any guitars. You ‘re one lucky dude to have those!

The Club Charter (first post) said “everything Tobias,” so it looks like we’ll have to let you in – LOL!

I thought the majority of the guitars (exception being the one withe dark wood top, which looks much older) were made by the Gibson factory after they took over completely. They're rare, but they're really good guitars. I've been trying to nab one forever.

A passel of beauties there, Greg!

I thought the majority of the guitars (exception being the one withe dark wood top, which looks much older) were made by the Gibson factory after they took over completely. They're rare, but they're really good guitars. I've been trying to nab one forever.

I havent ever been able to get anyone to confirm the actual build dates for the tobias electrics. All I know is that they made roughly 250 of them and I think they started prototyping for them pretty early after the acquisition. In any case they did not manufacture them long. The later SN tobias guitars i have seen are in trans colors and burst configurations. Always with active barts.

The dark top is purple heart, its got a hard ash back. its serial number 002. I believe its one of the prototypes...the neck is like a 5 string bass neck, maybe 6, scaled down. WIDE and FAT (luckily I started as a bass player and love the C neck on my Precision bass). The 002 guitar has a tongue oil finish on it, and stock 57 classics. All the numbers match (body, neck, and gold hardware specification under the lead pickup).

The other guitar i acquired from a former long time gibson employee. It is neck number 144 and body number 13. I think that it was an R&D guitar that was stripped of all its hardware after they finished up the line. It has a gloss finish on it that had never been level sanded, so presently I am in process of leveling and then buffing. Then I get to carve a bone nut and make wood cover plates like a good old mikey made tobias! Maybe Ill post my progress!

Greetings,

Here's my '95ish Growler

Now to a bit of a mystery. Out of all the research I've done,
I've never seen an extra code stamped across the top of the
headstock. It reads ELH LTD 002. I've read that some employee(s) took parts home here and there and assembled them. Could this be one? The really cool thing is the initials (ELH) match my own :smug:

Anyone have any insight on this?

Can I get a number? I have a pair of 1990 Killer B5s - made in Burbank - picked them up myself! The purple has been my main bass since I got it. I had the natural one converted to fretless shortly after I got it, but it's being re-fretted as we speak, since I don't play much fretless anymore.

Hi, can anybody tell which wood combination my Classic 5 has from the enclosed pictures?

Thanks Oystein

Body looks like Alder. I think I see what is probably a Wenge tone plate.
I'm not sure about the top - possibly Bubinga?

The top could also be purpleheart- it turns brown like that, but with the picture being so hazy and dark it's hard to tell.

I had a pre-Gib purpleheart Tobias, and it was very definitely purple.
Amazingly, beautifully purple.
