Official Tobias Club

Question... How many Tobias basses do you need to own to be part of the "Official Tobias Club?" I currently have five. First, yes, a Toby and then I have a Growler, Basic, Classic and a Signature. The first three are four string and the last two are five. They vary in age with oldest being built in '95 and the newest in '05. That, of course, excludes the Toby - it's a newer one and I mainly use it just for practice. At least to my ear, they all sound great and I find them all very easy to play.

I'll take a picture of the whole heard but in the meantime I added a picture of the Classic. There's an interesting story behind it. I purchased it several years ago from a small store owned by a couple. They had it since 2004 when they use to be a Gibson dealer. Apparently no one wanted it. After playing it several times I knew I had to have it. The sound was so mellow and it was so easy to play. It was neat to find a ten year plus old bass still in mint shape for sale. I have visited a lot of small stores since then and have never found another bass like this.

It's interesting to hear the comments regarding the Growler. That one seems to get most of the attention. So much that I have been asked several times to sell it for considerably more that what I paid for it. In addition to the red body color, it has a very beautiful natural medium brown colored fret board. Who ever put it together picked a good combination of colors/woods. I'm the second owner. The original owner had a blue one as well which he sold off right before selling the red. Not too sure how odd ball a blue one is. I have seen several other colors for sale once in awhile but the red is still my favorite.

Well, I unfortunately only have one Tobias, but they let me in! :)

Love that bubinga Classic you found in the small shop!

That flame-maple 5-string to the right of it, that looks like the same one that was a topic of discussion here a while back -
see here. It was unusual because it was sold as a Signature, but had a Classic neck. IIR someone who had worked at the factory weighed in and said it was a special order, and that there was only one guy in the shop who knew how to do a one-piece top on a neck-through. The factory wasn't sure what model designation it should get, but went with "Signature" because that was the price-point it was sold at. (Edit – I see on the thread that you were indeed the one to score that beauty!)

Is the dark red one on the right one of the cheap Toby basses? I got my hands on one earlier this year and was really amazed at its tone and sustain and overall "playability." Certainly light-years better than its price-point would suggest.

I'm watching out for ya' scuba... I had thought about letting mine go, but just can't part with it. Love that bass. If I ever do, you get dibs. I might consider a swap for a fretless Toby Pro V, but that's about it.

A tale of two Tobys... or; can there be such a thing as too many Tobys? :laugh:

I picked up another Toby Pro V from a fellow TB'r this past week. It's had a Seymour Duncan electronics upgrade, but my future plans for it are a de-fret, and lined fretless conversion. I really like these MusicYo Tobias... they're well-made of choice wood, and the neck-through construction makes for a very resonant well-balanced bass. Little heavy, but I've got worse.

This one came with more of a quilted maple for the body wings where my other one has a flamed maple figuring. Interesting too, how The neck woods differ... this 'new' one is markedly darker than the other. I've always read they were wenge' but looking at then together, I wonder if the lighter shade could be walnut laminates.

Here's a new family portrait with the Growler 5-string, and couple closer looks at the Tobys.
