Anyone know what model this is? It looks sort of like one of the Zii series, but the pickups are different....

I don't think it's a prototype, and I don't think it's crafted in Japan. All the parts on my bass seem original and can be found on the link below. My guess is that it's Korean. The bass seems to be an older and simpler version of the Supernova ZI. [Invalid or Expired Link Removed]

I'm afraid I can't give a rave review. The neck is bent at the 10th fret (quite sharp, not a normal curvature) and impossible to adjust with the truss rod. I've never come across a wooden neck this hard. It's almost as stiff as my aluminium Kramer. I have to find a (cheap) way to get it straight. Except for this major flaw, the wooden parts seem to be of good quality and crafted fairly nice. The hardware is cheapish Korean stuff from WooSung Chrous Industries. To my taste, the "LJF" pickups don't sound good wired in series (no treble at all, and not a nice p-bass sound either). They sound OK in parallell, either as is or the two outermost coils (j-bass sound) or the two innermost coils (MM-type of sound). If I can get the neck straight I'm going to rewire it like this.

I am convinced your bass to be a japanese build beauty of a bass. I have three japanese fretless basses, all from mid 80`ies, and they all have the same hardware as to be seen on your bass. But regarding the model, I have to guess it to be late 90? this I don`t know for shure.

I posted this a couple of years ago but here it goes again....

I have a Japanese Bossa OJB-5 bass that sells new for about $3000. I also have and have had many Tune TWX series basses and let me tell you, all though these basses differ in price by over $2500, they use the SAME EXACT preamp!!! I need to do some more investigation but they may share. The same pickups too. My Bossa has wood pickup covers so I’ll have to get a peek
at the bottom or something. I can tell you that the Tune and the Bossa both feature dual coil pickups and can be coil tapped. I did this on one of my Tune 5 strings with KILLER results – especially running the outside coils in single mode!!! Then there’s the Tune’s 3 piece quarter sawn neck, sealed tuners, heavy bridge and Hi-Fi tone!

These basses are the best kept secret, especially when I find them for under $200!!

I've just received my Tune TBJ41 Bass Maniac yesterday.....I must say I'm impressed

I love the feel of the neck and the fretwork is excellent and the neck feels like an old friend.......I lowered the action to almost very low and no buzzing is to be heard...I will change the strings at a later date (don't like the ones on it now....I prefer flats)....It's a very versatile bass with the EQ.....Only 2 problems....
1. I wish it were a short scale (as I have very small hands and short scales is all I play) but I wanted to try out a long scale and did not like the sound of the Ibanez SR500 Soundgear and frankly, I think this Tune is better than the Ibby.......
2. Wish it didn't neck dive.....I have a bad back and neck problems....and after having played this bass for a very short time my neck is killing me and I may have to sell it even though I like it a lot......

Nice bass overall for the money! I replaced the plastic knobs with gold ones to match the hardware. It's now tuned EADGC. Would like to try alternative pickups though. Not sure if the Japanese equivalents use better pickups. Has anyone had positive results with other pickups? I'd like a more hi-fi sounding tone. Tighter bass, silky high-end, overall smoother sounding instrument. Might also consider clear-coating the body cause it's susceptible to scratches and discoloration.

I believe I have found an inexpensive cure for the neck heavy bass!!Take an old belt.(I prefer an old dress belt)Shorten it so that it can wrap around your upper thigh.Mine is about 25 inches long.Drill some new holes so you can buckle it.Now,with your bass strapped on feed the belt between the back of the bass near the end strap peg between the bass and your strap.Wrap the belt around your upper thigh of your right leg (or your left.Your choice)to complete a loop and buckle it!Tighten it so that it is snug enough.There!Your bass neck is angle is at a good playing angle.The neck doesn't dive!You can walk around with it.
