Hello.

I'm Diego from Italy! i apologize for my poor english/american :)
I have a korean Tune TWB 6 with the standard preamp (GZP2) and i would like to upgrade it installing a new preamp (aguilar OBP3 i guess).
It's difficult to replace the pickups because of the non standard size of them, so i would install a upgraded preamp.

I read some back posts; some users installed a obp3 and i would like to have some feedback for the sound after the upgrade.
is there a noticeable improvement of the sound or sound shaping (parametric mids) from this upgrade?

If you can find those old post where someone installed a OBP3 and click on "Quote"you can send them an alert and ask them.

Hi Diego, I replaced the preamp of my Bass Maniac TB04 a few years ago with an OB3, but I also replaced the stock pickups with a Nordstrand P-J set at the same time as the piezo system was failing. I know it's a different configuration to the TWB 6, but for what it's worth it really improved the sound and mid-shaping options... but I miss the extra bite of the piezos.

Here's my two MIJ Bass maniacs. Firstly a very early 90's ash one. It looks MIK, but I spoke to the original buyer who confirms all the details of its purchase and that it had the "Made in Japan" sticker on the control cavity cover on purchase (which is still there).
The preamp was a little uninspiring when I bought it so now has an Artec 3 band with sweepable mids preamp, which suite it very well. It s a great match. This bass sounds fantastic

Secondly, an 86/87 MIJ 4 string maniac, with a massively thick (half the bass) quilted maple (?) top. Its been quite heavily modded with a new heavy duty output jack, passive electronics and Lollar pickups. Sounds just great though.
This one seems to have brass frets as well as the brass nut. The other maniac I have only has the brass nut, frets seem to be normal nickel/silver.

I love that these have the playability of the Ibanez SR series but none of the sonic compromises that I have found in the Ibbys, which have been relatively uninspiring (even a 90's MIJ prestige I had). I have now sold all my other basses.

That looks like my Bullseye. 36" scale, sounds like freaking thunder. Made by the father of the tribe in Japan. Cost me about $ 1,700 or $1,800 fifteen or twenty years ago.

The fret job is sublime, and that is the best B string I've ever touched. A real masterpiece.

Don't let go of that one!!!

Just got a Japanese Tune TWB flame top over mahogany. I love it. I really find the gzp-2 preamp punchy, big and full. What strings are you all using? To me these basses sound like a cross between the mid burp of a Ken Smith and the modern feel of a MTD. Maybe a little Roscoe bigness in there too. Any body else feel this way?

I put Nordstrand Dual Coils in mine along w/ a Nordy 3 way preamp.

I usually use GHS Boomers on my fretless TWB.Snapshot_20170418.JPG
But I'm going to put the same S.I.T. Conklin PSR18135 Power Steels that I us on my seven,on my TWB.Snapshot_20160826.JPG
I'll use six of the strings.
I'll save the extra "F" string for my seven.
