neither really, it's a (dirty) boost pedal. If you have a proper tube amp, you can use it to push the amp into o/d, but the pedal itself doesn't have much gain. I used one in front of my old bassman for years, and also is v good at driving other gain pedals...
I an really interested in this - love Mat's pedals, and the bass samples sound incredible...
I agree. The samples sound great. Matt's pedals are some of my favorites. I am dying to get a PPB on my board (that is what I have my Grey Stache listed in the classifieds) and this just might be next.

The PPB can do light OD and full out raunch if you tweak the internal bias control. I used to tweak mine so much that I had Matt wire it to an external pot instead, so I could adjust it on the fly. It can do an almost clean boost as well.
Very underrated pedal IMO.
Nero, you'd have to admit that whilst the pedal can be a great OD, especially with an external trim pot, it really is designed as a slightly gritty boost pedal. I think Flymo was alluding to how most people would use it, and how Matt has it dialed in when stock.
I recently got a modded version, but went back to the original internal trim pot one as I found that once you have that sweet spot, you don't want it to budge! For me, it's just a hair of grit, and it gives a nice little bass and presence kick as well, and a smidge of extra volume if the volume knob is straight up at 12. Perfect and simple!

Haven't tried both together, but for me the tfr is much better. To my ears the ppb sounds quite harsh, for want of a better word.
I'm not contesting what the pedal was originally designed for, but to state that the PPB couldn't do light or heavy OD is as I stated, wrong. It's not the conventional way to use it, but it can go to that territory if that's what you want.
It's totally cool that you, and others, dig the stock version, because that sweet spot is heaven, but when ever people ask about what the pedal can do, I tell them what it can do. Simple as that.
Such an awesome pedal. I used to have mine at the end of my chain, always on, and it's a great "make-everything-else-sound-better" pedal. I just rearranged my board and put it at the beginning, and it makes everything sound better there too. Pushing other drive pedals with the Phatty just plain rules.
