When I first received my Vinny, as some might know, I did not specify anything cosmetic. It came with Chrome parts. My first reaction was, "I should have asked for black". But the more I see it, the more I like it. I saw AJ's 4 string Vinny with black hardware and I am glad I have the chrome. Now my TJ has black and I dig that too (again I did not specify anything cosmetically).

I feel very comfortable leaving the cosmetic choices (even tops) to the builder.

Yeah, changing to black was my first thought, mainly because all my basses have black hardware with the darker fancy top. I'll probably give it few days, then make a decision...

Hi All,

I have 6 basses but what I am REALLY wanting now is a fretless Zon.

Can you please help me identify the model, pickups and electronics on the following bass? I have heard this bass close up [ did not get to play it ] and it really nails the tone I am looking for. I am wanting a 4 string fretless Zon that gets the tone this bass produces.

Sorry for the blurry pic. Only one online I could find.

Looks like a fretless Sonus Special with a bubinga top and probably ash body. Bartolini pickups, 3 band preamp with a mid selector switch (250/400/800 hz)

I am SO wanting Zon Sonus Special 4 string fretless. Unfortunately, I do NOT have the patience to do a custom order.

There is a new one here that I may buy if I can no longer stand it: Link Removed

Combing the net trying to find a used one. I will also grab a fretted one if I find it and have it defretted.

Wish me luck please :help:

Just take your time to find the right one.
It took me several months to find mine but in the end was the ultimate one. Never played such a good fretless ever.

String question...

I don't have my VB4 fretless yet but should soon. However, I'm interested in trying some Thomastik Infeld Jazz Flats on it at some point in the future. I've heard since these are low tension strings some basses may have trouble with them. Any thoughts on how the VB4 might react to these strings over the Daddario flats that I'm having Zon put on them initially?

Does the neck joint on that one still attach at around the 20th fret?

Yes, though it's a set neck so the joint is nowhere near as clunky as the bolt-on, and it has additional carving to make room for your hand on both sides of the cutaway. The problem with this type of neck is that it requires making new molds to change the mounting scheme for a set neck, so there are only so many ways you can do it.

I don't have a picture of it now, but the joint is identical to the set-neck joint Fodera uses for 4 and 5 strings.

Cool. Interesting lower horn- the only one I recall seeing in the same shape was made of metal (can't recall the brand). A bit phallic with the sapwood placement though :)

It's just the regular Sonus lower horn with the section scooped out- I think I'll have to get some better pictures so you get a clearer view of what it looks like. I think some of the wood is hidden by the chair.

Picture Michael Manring's fretless Sonus with the hyperbass-style cutaway, and that's what this is, but with a few more positions, frets, and 5 strings. They've built a bunch like this (but all fretless).

Okay- I've seen a deep Sonus cutaway somewhere before. Yours just looks much thinner in the picture- probably the camera angle or cushion like you mentioned.

Sonus 5 fretless. You can't see the original S1 lightwave pickup system. By far my favorite bass I've ever owned. Stupid photographer, more interested in me than the instrument,what the hell is wrong with him... ;-)

Really, yours is a fretless TJ with a set neck and without the wide-body option (as 5 string TJ's are 6-string sized bodies)- mine started with the exact same baseline but fretted, then when Joe threw in the 36 frets it became a deep-cutaway, set neck 5/1.

It's sort of all semantics as they're all just Sonus basses.

It is thinner because the access on Michael's bass isn't very good. My options were to use the oversized body standard on a TJ5 to give me extra room in the cutaway, but I HATE big bodies on instruments, so I ate a little access in the nether-regions to have an overall comfortable instrument. So instead he made the horn thinner than normal, but probably not as thin as the picture makes it look because it's a dark purple wood on a dark brown body against a black chair in low light taken with an iPhone camera, lol.

I'll take some more pictures when I get home in a few weeks.
