Just sounds like a medium scale bass to me- a bass guitar is still a guitar no matter how many strings it has anyways :D

Does anyone know if Zon has considered doing a different cutaway on the Vinny? I really loved the sound of AJ's latest Vinny, to the point of possibly ordering one, but the upper frets residing on the body with no cutaway there made them very hard for me to reach (baby fingers Magee over here). Ideally, ordering a different body type with the same specs in order to get the same sound would be great, but I've played probably a dozen Zons and that particular Vinny is the only one that's had that tone, so I wouldn't want to order a different style if that body style is integral to that tone.

I guess since Todd and Joe are both talking about this publicly, the cat's out of the bag. ;)

Todd's new personal bass is a going to be a new 32" headless model bassed on his current signature bass. I've been waiting for the a 32" "standard' (w/ head) version, which is to be made side-by-side with Todd's bass. Joe has been having issues with the mold-maker and when last I talked to him (a couple of weeks ago) he was waiting on the guy to re-make the mold.

My guess is the tone comes from the neck. :D

I'm going to assume the battery compartment isn't here anymore.

In either case you'd probably have to do with no horn at all? Kinda like a basslab:

AJ's Vinny has a bolt-on neck- it may or may not account for the bit of more punch his has than the set-neck Vinnys I've heard. I don't recall if there's a battery compartment there or not. No horn would be fine, but the fact that it's such a specific model makes me think they wouldn't extended the cutaway or lop off the horn altogether.

Tooling in-house? Yeah right. It's pretty tough to have a CNC machine just to make molds occasionally. Almost everyone outsources that unless they make so many parts that they wear out the molds quickly.

I just thought that he used composite tools so he could make them himself. No need for a CNC if you can make a prototype part to make the mold with. I remember reading that their composite necks get a lot of sanding/shaping after they come out of the mold. If that's true, I guess I don't see why if they are being molded with high precision CNC molds.

Not shaping, but sanding of course. Because of the type of mold they use and the excess around the outsides, there is trimming, sanding and finish work to do, just like any composite part no matter how nice the mold is. But there isn't shaping to do- that's done by the mold.

Also, molds wear over time, so that adds to time spent to make sure fitment is precise.
