I've also had perfectly good experiences with some, BUT, I've learned to set expectation more on Angus' side of things, as I do believe that's more typical in the custom hand built arena (unfortunately).

Just received this yesterday; I haven't had much time with it yet, but it will get its first live work (with me) tomorrow. If my math is correct, this is my 11th Zon overall and 2nd Custom. It's surprisingly very, very warm sounding. Much more P-Bass like than I expected. BEAUTIFUL bass, and it feels so familiar. Not sure why I haven't had a Zon in so long.

Seriously tho... that's an AWESOME looking bass, and I'm not surprised it's a little warmer sounding with that redwood top. My older Redwood (tho not blackened/water cured) top'd bass is also just slightly warmer sounding than my newer Koa topped one, which is a bit more aggressive. I really dig both a LOT... no fave.

Hope this one's a keeper for ya. :)

We live in a great time with a lot of awesome bass builders making some amazing instruments. My TJ-6 is a blast to play, looks great, and sounds amazing. So much beauty out there for us to sample. All of these Zons look HOT!

Alright, I'm really surprised just how warm my new Custom is. I need to experiment with strings some first, but I'm thinking of doing a preamp swap. Does anyone have any experience with the new Mike Pope Flex Core? I'm wondering if that might open this baby up a little?

I have, but not in a Zon. Definitely more open sounding than the Bart, but if it'd be enough is a tough question, and it's a $300 preamp. If it was me, I think I'd try it though, with a bass that nice... I'd really want to exhaust all options before deciding to flip and continue searching for "the one". I can tell you this, tho, if you do flip and move on, definitely get something with a harder top like Maple or Koa or similar. That should do it. Then of course, at least IMHO, the J style pickups are more open sounding too, so maybe consider moving back to the regular Sonus 5.

Just some thoughts anyway.

A Sonus 5 with J style pickups was what I was after, but they are almost non-existent on the used market. I think part of what I'm not hearing is what the J's inherently have, so the preamp swap might not be enough. It's going to be a tough call though, because this bass is SOOOO NICE. :(

Would a pair of Nordy Big Singles be a drop in swap?

Ooooohhhhh... danger signs... pretty bass, but pretty sure it's not the right pickup type. Yeah, I may have to retract my recommendation, because I tend to agree, and it's not just a high end thing, it's an overall voicing thing, which you can not "fix" with a different preamp. If the J style pickup sound is what you're really after, then I think there's honestly only one way to satisfy yourself (unfortunately). :hmm:

I don't think so, BUT, Carey has been known to do custom pickup covers for existing pickup models... in fact, there might even be the possibility of getting some NJ5 or NJ5S pickups under those shells if the route is long enough, not sure. May be worth asking Carey.
