Official Zon Club Part 5

(dealing with tendinitis and tennis elbow from my double bass days).

Zon rules!
Chris
The tendonitis thing is a bummer. I have that too from repetitive lifting .It really does not seem to ever go away.A doctor told me the only thing that makes it go away is to stop doing what is causing it . Zon will help you with this .Modulus also .The lowest action achievable is the only help I can get and using lower tension strings .Iam not even sure if my DR hi beams are lower tension but I like the sound and they seem to be lower tension to me .Sounds like your happy with that bass hope it provides some relief to your back and hands.

Dear Gwangi What was it about Modulus that you were so unsatisfied with? Did you ever listen to Titan Force out of Colorado Springs?

Hey Golower, Titan Force are really close friends of ours, we use to jam with them and they have opened shows for my band back in the early 80's when they where just called Titan.
Every member in that band is a serious musician, John Flores the original bassist isn't in the band any more but is a working jazz bassist in Colorado Springs and he seriously RIPS IT UP.
As far as the Modulus thing I would prefer not to talk about that on this forum, other than I will say this Joe Perman is one of the most down to earth coolest human beings on the planet, never meet such a sincere and humble person as much as Joe

A good drummer friend of mine from Colorado Springs who now lives in West Fargo Mike Keller turned me onto Titan Force .I was pretty amazed especially with their drummer who Mike said had at one time won the Colorado drum off or some drumming competition. They are very good metal .Not sure if they still are a band or not but yeah that drummer was over the top good and I liked their music.

I'm noticing with the changing weather, the neck on my Zon TJ5 is flattening out. This kind of surprised me seeing the neck is graphite. I hope the bass has a truss rod as it's starting to approach unplayable.

Is this common with Zon necks?

The neck on my Sonus moves around ever so slightly. If I played with med/high action it would be barely noticeable but with my preferred low action it is pretty obvious when it needs a slight tweak

Having worked for joe years ago, I saw a handful of basses come In that needed relief adjustments, that didn't have rods. I know they *shouldnt* move but they do. I decided then that when I bought my used Zon, I'd hold out for one with a rod, based on my experience there.

I've now had 3 Zons (I currently have two) and live in an absolutely horrible climate for instruments (inconsistently wet/dry and warm/cold regardless of the season)... and the only time I get any movement is when I change to strings that have higher or lower tension.

If I keep the same brand and gauge of strings, they stay put all year... if I change to something that has a different tension, I'll notice a slight change in a few days.

A very small adjustment (usually about an 1/8th of a turn) will usually get it back to where I like it, and it's slow to respond... it usually takes another couple of days to settle in with the adjustment.

Every once in a while I'll get a very, VERY slight change with a brand new string change... but it'll go away as they break in.

Where is the adjustment on Zons? Ones I've owned in the past didn't have truss rods. I haven't noticed a cover on the headstock in pictures. Is removal of the neck required? How is it done on the set-neck instruments?

For the latest Sonus models, yes, you have to remove the neck for truss rod adjustments.

For Elites models, I believe you may remove the cover at the end (bridge side) of the fingerboard, but I've never got a chance to try.

I'll try taking my neck off in the next couple of days. I'm hoping there's a truss rod in there. I'm using very low tension strings (TI Jazz Rounds). Hopefully I won't have to pick strings based on the curvature of the neck.

Looking at the four allen bolts holding the neck on, three of them look slightly rounded. Hopefully they're not stripped.

So I just took the neck off and thankfully, there was an allen headed truss rod adjuster. I loosened it half a turn, bolted everything back up and it's much better.

Probably a combination of low tension strings and the first time in high humidity (at least since I've had the bass) contributed to it straightening out. I'm thinking the amount it'll raise will be within my tolerance so this might be my last neck adjustment on this bass.

If I remember correctly, the fingerboard is made up of wood particles. Maybe that's why it was affected by humidity more than say an all graphite neck/fingerboard?

Graphite /composite does move just not very much. . Zon is considered the most stable neck in the industry. The fretboard is usually thin layers of birch impregnated with resin and compressed . Iam not sure if the the neck is graphite reinforced composite ? It's the secret recipe .

Sweet deal on a 4 string set neck Sonus special on eBay. Seller isn't positive it's a special and doesn't seem to notice its a set neck. If it stays close to this price, it'll be a sick deal for someone! http://www.ebay.com/itm/231254682413

Looking at the pickup placement, that would be considered a "Special"... and the set-neck makes it a Sonus Elite (I've heard Joe refer to all set-necks as Elites before)... so, technically, that bass is a Sonus Elite Special 4.

And yes... that definitely looks like a sweet deal.

A friend let me use his Ampeg BXT410 HL4 (a 4-10 inch speaker cab) for the weekend .My Sonus 5-1 sounded real nice thru the cabinet and Mesa Big Block 750 . What speaker configurations are you using with your Zon basses and liking? The cab is a real heavy one to lug but sure has the heavy solid tone to boot.
