Glad to see the ZON Club still going . I am the owner of a " new to me / gently used 519 " that arrives tomorrow . Redwood burl / ash with two longer soapbar pickups . 34" scale wich I guess is rare in a 519 . It's the one from Bass SanDiego if you happen to have seen it on their site . Pretty damn excited .
Zon Club = purgatory for people who placed an order and are waiting to see if they are going to self destruct before their bass arrives in 6 mos (umm.... Yeah ..Rome wasn't built in a day)
They are so worth the wait !

Nice! The Sonus Specials have that great burpy pickup configuration- I had two Elricks with the same config. They have a terrible acronym though...
Instead of getting black hardware from Zon, you should order some GB 350s from Gotoh. Drop in replacements for the Gotoh GB7s Zon usually uses, but significantly lighter.

No idea on how a 519 sounds- haven't played one. I thought the "5" in 519s stood for the 35" scale. Does that make yours a 419?
I thought it stood for 5 string with 19 mm spacing but was just guessing ?

People need to know Joe customizes a bass all different directions . The models listed on the website have been customized from time to time many different ways, if you enquire about it and Zon agrees to do it . It may cost extra to do so .

Yeah I had a 5 string version years ago. They maybe a little less versitile with that pickup placement but they really kill the jazz bass thing. Plus you don't see 4 strings come along often. GB 350s hmm? Didn't even know such a thing existed. Do they hold tune well? My teacher has the Hipshot Ultralites on some of his basses and he says they're terrible at holding tune.

I think Cody Wright's main bass is a 4-string SS, which sounds great.
They hold their tuning exactly like the GB7s. I've had multiple basses with Hipshot Ultralites and they held their tuning just fine- how hard does your instructor pluck??
Not hard at all... I don't have any experience with them. That was just a comment he made in passing once.

All of the Ultralights I put on my basses are rock solid.
One of the nice things about them is that you can adjust the tension on the gear mechanism, unlike sealed tuners.
It could be that your teacher has some loose gears and never bothered to tighten them properly.
I see. Maybe that's it.

I have Hipshots on two of my Zons and no issues to speak of. A quick phone call from your teacher to Hipshot may remedy the situation. They stand behind their product.

This is standard for the 519 however Zon will do custom stuff including 34"/19mm spacing.
I have both Ultralites and GB350s on my basses and they both hold tuning just fine.
The GB350s are a bit lighter, though. They're also a bit harder to find since not many places carry them.

Got the bass home safe and sound. Man I forgot how light these things are. It was very well taken care of. Looks brand new. Only thing I did notice - the control cover has wood screws on it. I thought Zon used brass inserts and the cover does have those countersunk holes. I'm wondering if they got stripped or something and were replaced with wood screws. Or was there a time Zon used wood screws on those? The bass is about 10 years old.
IIRC, they only use the threaded inserts for the control cavity in their Custom series and Elite models.
Ahh ok. It's not a big deal I was just curious. Just gotta be careful with those wood screws. Not that I get in there a whole lot but you do have to take the cover off to change the battery.
Yeah, just always lightly tighten until it's snug and the cover no longer moves or wiggles.
Doing that once every 6 months or so to change the battery isn't going to hurt anything.
And, honestly, even if a screw did strip eventually, it's a super easy fix.
