Anyone who can't see the difference between a Läkland Duck Dunn and a Fender Precision Bass, even from the back of the audience, doesn't have an opinion that's worth losing any sleep over, IMHO.

I'm a proud non-fender guy. There is just too many bass player with a Fender or Fender-ish copy like G&L, Sadowsky etc.

Yeah, I agree with comments I've read so far.
1) For those who do not play music at all: Fender is probably the first (and maybe only) name to cross their mind when they hear the word bass. You might have to mention bass-guitar, as their initial mental image may be an upright.
2) For those that play instruments, such as guitar: They may still name Fender first. However, because they've been playing guitar, they're more aware of other companies because they manufacture both guitars and basses (Gibson, Ibanez, ESP, etc).
3) Then there's us: Mention the word bass to 100 different TB members & they'll likely conjur up 100 different mental images. If you mention Fender, we may initially draw our mental links to G&L, MusicMan, the few years of the Fender/Kubicki agreement & the current Fender sister-companies (Squier, Gretsch, Jackson/Charvel, etc.) Then our minds eventually seem to drift to the "Fenders on steroids"... (Sadowsky, Lull, Lakland, Celinder, etc.) There are other non-Fender mass manufacturers who have made great names for themselves (Gibson, Warwick, etc.) Then there are us, myself included, who lust after individually luthier-handcrafted boutique basses. In reality, the only other person who will recognize it, is another bass player that's also been GASing over the same builder's work.
Oh, and only another TB member is going to recognize the MothMan bass.

I only own Fender-types, but I'm no snob. Play what you want to play and that's it. If you want to play an Ibanez Soundgear in a Motown band, great. Is it different? Yep. But it's not my gear. Wanna play a vintage Kay hollowbody in a goth metal band? Wonderful. Whatever works.

OT but not really.... I was on the road and stopped by a GC in Atlanta.
Went in with my NYC Sadowsky (Fender knock-off really) to check out an amp and waste time.
The guy at the door told me I would have to leave my gig bag "either in the car or at the door...".
And he wasn't cool about it. Kind of a jerk really.
So, me being a jerk back I told him...and I quote "Run along and get your boss skippy."
Now, let me say that I walked in and he was just not nice. No hello or anything. Just leave your bag in the car/here.
He said "I am the boss and it doesn't come in here like that unless you're trading it in for something better".
Me: "I could buy at least 3 of the most expensive basses in this store for the price of this bass".
Him: "For a Fender????.....Yeah, right".
Well, I went to turn and just walk out when the manager finally came up.
To end this story quickly, I watched him get his a$$ chewed for "being the boss" and I got a nice discount on some strings!
All for having a Fender knock-off!
We really can't expect everyone to know about all the variants of guitars let alone basses.
Hell, the whole single-cut PRS/Gibson Les Paul battle started when some excutive's at Gibson kid saw Creed on MTV and the guitar player was playing a PRS- and the kid was like
"Look dad, he's playing a Les Paul!!!" You can take it from there......
Oh, my old beat to hell and modded to the moon and back 70's Jazz is still and always will be the cats nuts to me.

I own a bunch of Fenders. When I play other basses I don't get negative comments either. Never happened to me before.
Being a guitarist for 20+ years, if I let someone else's opinion of my gear bother me I'd be a nervous wreck and end up in a nuthouse. You wanna talk snobbery? It's out there in spades, and nearly every guitar player you meet has really strong opinions about your gear. Some of them are grown up enough to base the conversation on your abilities as a player. Others, not so much.
I used to play with another guitarist in a band who could find no other reason to diss my gear, so he went on and on about some weird "undertone" my rig was putting out. "Well, you know, it would be a great sound, but there's this really weird undertone. Maybe you should try (insert some portion of the gear he was using here)". Nobody else heard anything wrong with my rig, and I never lacked a position as lead guitatrist in a band the whole time I played the club scene. I played my heart out, and in the end, it was my skills with the instrument that were recognized, not what guitar, amp, or anything else it was that I played through.
Other people's opinions of my choices of guitar, rig, or anything else, roll off me like water off a duck's back. Some people need thicker skin.

Just buy a fender logo and slap it on a sadowsky.

I'll admit, Fenders are a favorite of mine. Although I think my main bass will always be my '84 Squier Precision, I still think of it as a Fender because it's basically the same thing.
I've gotten bashed for playing my Squier. I find it funny that I replaced every part of this bass with new parts and it sounds simply amazing with the new stuff, somehow the "Squier" logo detracts from the sound.

It's the mojo, both of mine were made in Corona, California,,probably on top of an ancient Native American burial ground. You just can't beat the mojo
I told a guitarist friend of mine that I was saving up to buy myself a Rickenbacker. He essentially said: "Rickenbacker? I thought that the good ones were the Fender Jazz Bass and the Fender P Bass"
