Hipsters are folks who take irony past its logical conclusion. I love irony, but I try and love it as an observer, not a full on participant.

Hip = the art of contradiction.
Would-be trendsetters who claim to hate trends. Non-conformists who all look alike. Individuals who get all their ideas from writers. People who claim to embrace art, but dismiss it when someone agrees with them. Socialites who self-alienate. Fashion slaves that have no taste in clothing. You get the idea.

I especially love the hipsters who express their "individuality" by plastering their cars with mass-produced bumper stickers...
That'll show the world how painfully unique you are.
Fortunately, hipsterism seems to be something that most people grow out of as they get older (hipsters have been around for a while... it's not a recent trend or fad). I had a friend who was a self-professed hipster in his 20's; complete with the "I'm-better-than-you-because-I-like-bands-you've-never-heard-of" attitude... Spewing derision on people if they like anything that's too "mainstream"... Pretending to care about important social/humanitarian issues... Pretending to understand irony, etc...
He said he stopped being a hipster when he realized what a hypocritical DB he had become.
Besides, it gets harder to pull off that look when you're 45.

I've been living in Austin for 8 months now and many would argue that Austin is hipster ground zero. When I think of hipsters the first things that come to mind are skinny men with jeans 5 sizes too small, old single speed bikes (and occasionally a unicycle for ultimate "irony"), silly mustaches on men in their early twenties and my personal favorite: silly mustaches tattooed on fingers to be held under the nose in lieu of an actual silly mustache. I also associate them with trendy art galleries in "regentrified" low income areas.The main impression I get from the music they like is that every drummer hits the snare drum too hard, no matter what the band sounds like. For the most part they are pretty non confrontational and easy to get along with.
As to what a hipster is; I can't define it but I know it when I see it.
