Many of us use amps that have more power than a cab, without issue, including me. I just keep the master volume low, never had a problem.

For my part, I think I’d recognize the sound of an overloaded speaker, but never having actually heard it, I can’t be sure. The only time I blew up speakers was as a teen. I was playing Joan Jett I Love Rock & Roll turned up to 11 on a cheap stereo. “Boom Boom Crash” turned into “puh puh zzz” as both woofers failed with no warning.

A single D-140 and a Showman would be risky venture imo.

A Twin Reverb or a Dual Showman driving a JBL D-130 was a pretty popular choice with steel guitar players in these parts. I suspect that was the motivation behind this unique custom job currently listed on the local Craigslist:

Hi All,
I prefaced my subject as I'm sure this has been asked many times, but reading through the many threads, I couldn't get the answers I was looking for. So, don't yell at me

I ordered a markbass Little mark 58R, which is 500w RMS at 4 ohms. I also ordered the mb58r 2x10 xl speaker cab, which is rated at 400w. I had originally ordered the 8ohm version of the speaker cab, but guitar center sent me the 4ohm version by accident. My question is, aren't I going to be overloading the speakers if I plug this in, or is the 400watt speaker RMS rating for EACH speaker? Long story short, am I safe to plug in the 500w RMS @ 4ohm little mark into the 2x10 400w RMS cab @ 4ohm?

Secondly, the cab has two speaker inputs. Does this mean they're wired in parallel vs series? I would have assumed that it would have one wire into the cab for series operation.

Considering the risk factor of an amp generating more power that the cab is rated. In terms of decibels created, there will not be a huge difference with either a 4 ohm or and 8 ohm version of the same cab. I’ll let the engineers like Wasanex or agedhorse explain. On a personal note, I think 8 ohm cabs just sound better.

A 4 ohm version of a cabinet that uses 2 drivers is very different than a 4 ohm driver… a 4 ohm driver is usually less efficient than its 8 ohm counterpart.

A 4 ohm, 2 driver cabinet uses 2 x 8 ohm drivers wired in parallel.

Since it was their error, all of this should be on them. Just make sure the replacement “cabinet” you receive is rated at 8 ohms.

Especially if you're drunk. I got replacement speakers directly from the manufacturer for blowing speakers. I told them that their speakers were rated at 127 decibels, and I swear I wasn't doing over 110.

Agreed! Thanks again. They’ve been great and are replacing it with no issue.

For everyone’s benefit: I did figure out that it happened online in the “cart”. I searched the 8ohm cabinet part # and added the open box version. Although the 8 ohm was confirmed to be added, there was some kind of glitch (specifically for the open box) that added the 4ohm in there.

I went back and checked to confirm the glitch and it’s still there.

May be best to order over the phone/over chat just to be sure for open box, currently.

@agedhorse - thanks again! I also noticed you’re in Davis and were/are an engineer at Mesa.

I’m out in Sac - Small world out there! I also have an early 2000’s Dual Rec and a combo single rec Rectoverb. I much prefer the tone of the single rec.
