I have no idea about the answer, but I really think you missed the boat with the title of the thread, which should have been

FWIW I had a 73 Telecaster that has a trans blonde finish that was ash and weighted about 8 .5 lbs. The poly on the P bass was very thin and wore thru and faded allot like your jazz. My 79 walnut stained P bass weighs 10 lbs is also ash but has a thicker poly clear coat like found on today's poly basses. The ash used latter was heavier and the finish thicker IMO.

Not a 100% true. I have an 04' P-bass in Butterscotch Blonde, and it's alder. Ash might have been more common, during the time when the OPs bass was made, but not 100%
