What kind of metal is best for bass? Seriously, though...about the vocals. Modern metal has two main types of vocals--Gollem (black metal) and Cookie Monster (death metal). This one has both. I guess that's cool.

For people who find this to be too much, I recommend Opeth. Very melodic, intricately arranged, and does that nice trick of switching up between instrumental and even (gasp) acoustic segments, and full-on metal fury.

About the playing--decently intricate, but seems to have a lot more going on in the right hand than necessary.

I wish that were still true, but they've been completely devoid of any metal leanings for the last two albums; still have my fingers crossed for a return to the Watershed/Ghost reveries era on the upcoming record though

Just because you CAN do something does not mean you should.

IMO having a good sense of taste is a far more attractive talent for a bassist to posess than finger gymnastics. Still though, I agree with you that those are some mighty impressive and accurate finger movements and based upon the band logo and "singer" I don't think taste is what they were going for.

I think that as a musician one has to be open to every kind of music, I started playing bass because of guys like Adam Nitti and jazz and fusion were the only genre of music I liked to listen to, a couple of years ago some friends of mine asked me to play in a metal band with scream vocals and heavily distorted guitars, I was skeptical at first but after I while I actually started enjoying this genre of music and started to listen to metal bands with amazing bassists like Beyond Creation, The Faceless (when Evan Brewer was in it), Opeth and Mudvayne. Thinking of music like this just as noise or a way to show-off is just closed-minded. One can dislike it of course, but has to respect it. But that's just my opinion
