Well.. this thread may have run its course. Thanks for everyone's opinions on the subject. Tone, sound and feel are clearly a subjective matter given how many players prefer the lead sleds/tube rigs to the convenience of a Micro/class D. Some hear/feel a difference. To each his own.
With so many variables in the mix, it is difficult to decide from a remote location with little chance to play many of the options side by side. The only thing I AM clear about is that I will not sacrifice tone/feel for portability. I am old with an aging back but I am strong enough to lug the lead sled for a while longer if it provides the heavy sound I prefer.

Great that you have come to a decision and good luck with your musical endeavors. One thing that was not clear to me through all of this; which amp type would sound best with Flats playing metal?
Word. I would rather see a good bass player who has trouble getting around using a micro rig than having to give up playing, that's for sure.
I think there are good amps built with every topology. You can find as many bad sounding lead sleds as you can find bad sounding micro amps, to your ear. If you have not found an amp of any particular set of criteria that doesnt sound good to you, you have to keep searching.
I dunno, these days I don't feel I really have to compromise. I could just get a Mesa Prodigy if I wanted a light amp. If I had the money, I mean.
