How the heck is anyone supposed to know when it's appropriate to create a new thread or revive an old one?

Well... The OP's original post was was in December of 2014, so... IMO it's certainly OLD enough. And, there was a 4 year gap from '16 to '20; which would seem to argue in favor of "Zombie" status. However... the subject of the post is still relevant, and also... sorta timeless. So, AFAIC? Nope; still not a Zombie Thread. And, I still stand by my post #69...
