Onboard envelope filter?

Would it be possible to have an onboard envelope filter installed? Has anyone ever heard of this or see this before? Thoughts?

It has been done before. Check out some history... ELECTRA HISTORY. Electra had a series of guitars and basses that would hold two effects modules. Click the link on that page for "MPC Modules" and enjoy the sounds. The basses with onboard effects were models X610, X620.

Also noteworthy is the X695 bass with interchangeable fretted and fretless necks, a mod which could easily be done with any bolt-on, a spare neck, and the right fasteners.

I think there are reasons why this sort of thing isn't common--it adds weight and complexity to your bass, and if it breaks, you can't easily take it out of the signal chain like you could with a pedal. Why, if you don't mind me asking, don't you want to go the pedal route?

Yes, it can be done. I contemplated doing it with my old Ibanez Soundgear.

I seem to remember seeing his basses with what looked like the pickups from a lap steel guitar and a giant brass plate with ten or fifteen switches and knobs, I believe those basses had an envelope filter built in, in additioin to other crazy features...

Yes it can!
I have been installing effects in basses for almost 30 years. I am pretty sure I was among the first to do it.

I've had lots of envelope filters and am always looking for a better one. They're very quirky, individual fx. A friend has 6 different ones on his pedal board. I've not yet found a circuit that is 'the one' I'd want permanently installed in my bass.
Only one that comes close is a MoogerFooger, and it wouldn't fit.
I prefer to keep the bass simple and leave fx on the floor.

Sadly enough, Bassist/Producer Rory Bennet took ill shortly after sending this Bass to us for restoration and died b4 we had a chance work on the Bass. It was returned to his family shortly after his funeral.

On the other hand, this was an old news story and Jonathan is now a sophmore in College and Michael (slightly taller than me and Jon) a sophmore in highschool.

I used to have to sneek him in the Namm shows in the morning b4 opening as he came with me as young as 8 years old. This winter Namm he will be running the booth while I stay in the shop and play 'catch-up'...

There were slightly more than 60 Basses made with that circuit. We made 16 of them as a one Pick-up Bass and the rest with 2 Pickups. The Bass shown belonged to Stanley Clark and was modified twice changing it to 2 PUs and then putting our newer PU in around 1982-'83.
