Larry is a great bass player, but again, not "under-rated" He was - long before you were born based on your avatar - one of the "GODs" of bass playing - him and Bootsy and Stanley Clarke were all huge stars in the 1970s.
P.S. Ddeondra - just thought of 3 more in the JT, Flea club - but it's still a VERY exclusive group.

based on my icon~ well yeah I'm fifteen. I really do wish I could've experienced his big career years. But I am excited that I'm seeing him in concert tomorrow and I'll be up front, not expensive, and maybe he will notice me since I will likely be younger.

Jack Ely, the singer/bassist of one of the first hard rock songs "Louie Louie"...deserves recognition. He was drafted in the service and replaced at the Kingsmen's peak of popularity and never received a dime for his performance. His voice is all over the radio to this day, and he still makes nothing.

Nice! I'm going to see him Saturday for the first time ever myself; my wife and I will be up front at our show, too. I hear he stays in good shape and still puts on a very good show.

Also I noticed you are from NZ. One of my best buddy's is a Kiwi, and I absolutely love the old flying nun/jangle/Dunedin sound. Especially the Bats!

Speaking of NZ.. I quite like the bass line on the Connan Mockasin track "Forever Dolphin Love". Good music from your tiny lovely country.

I have Big Country in my news feed on Fartbook, and Derek can be seen wearing a kilt a lot on stage these days :D

Yup, lots of great talent here in NZ, especially for such a small country! That sound you're talking about is one of my personal favourites, too! ;) In terms of more recent stuff, I totally dig Motocade's latest (or last, rather) album, 'Tightrope Highway' (They're from Auckland, I think).

If I take the literal meaning of underrated as someone that deserves much more respect & recognition than people will allow, then there are two bassists that come to mind:

Mark Adams - Slave. A wonderful natural tone and solid driving grooves to most of their songs make both him and the band Slave very undervalued IMHO.

Andrew 'Love' Levy - Brand New Heavies - seems to have the magic formula. The BNH basslines are consistently solid, not as in-your-face as perhaps Jamiroquai or other similar funk bands, but his grooves are much more subtle, & laid back.

Definitely agree, though depending on the circles you travel in, Mark isn't underrated at all.

I don't necessarily know about the term "underrated" but as far as maybe doesn't get the recognition as some other bass players. I'll add… And, yes, I know this is more than one…

Joe Giddleman – Mighty Mighty Bosstones

Mike Mills – R.E.M. I saw this posted earlier and completely agree.

Jonas Reingold – The Flower Kings. Highly respected by those familiar with prog, but not as well known outside the genre.

Matt Malley – Most notably, Counting Crows.
