One Bass Player You Think Is Underrated?

Fieldy and Sandman. Both broke through the barriers and preconceptions of what a bass is supposed to be/do/sound like and are true innovators of the instrument. One, however, is widely seen across TB as a no-talent hack, and the target of endless mockery and ridicule; the other is dead, and most people have no idea who he was. Tragic on both counts, for both men.

Gord Sinclair of The Tragically Hip, although they are only really Canadian famous.

Substitute "Chris Murphy" for "Gord Sinclair" and "Sloan" for "The Tragically Hip."

I'll also toss in Mani of The Stone Roses.

Arguably, huge numbers of bassists are underrated by the general public because bass is such an underappreciated instrument/role to begin with.
I think of people like Peter Cetera (as a bassist), Jim Fielder of BS&T, maybe Michael Steele of the Bangles as underrated. I'm sure there are many more.
I don't think Paul McCartney is overrated. Younger folks may not fully understand (because you weren't there, not because you're not smart or anything) the powerful, powerful impact he had on the way the instrument is played in pop and rock.

Kind of tough to throw out there, because the people who know him dig him quite a lot, but Garrett Sayers of The Motet and Garett Sayers Trio is a monster and super musical. I'd put him up there with almost any finger style player.

Billy Gould of Faith No More is seriously underrated in my opinion. Intensity matched by equal restraint,

Rodger Waters - His bassplaying is often overlooked but money is on a 7. His tone on one of these day- genius. brilliant writing

Don't know if it's been said yet, but Craig Montoya of Everclear is a great bassist but is barely mentioned anywhere.

I don't think that Jeff Ament from Pearl Jam gets enough credit. The things he does on the fretless are pretty incredible, and he adds more to the band's overall sound than I think many people realize.

I will up the Graham Maby one and throw in Bruce Thomas of The Attractions from about the same time frame with Elvis Costello. Both had me pulling out my hair at one time or another back then.
