I've never tried the AMT line of pedals, so I can't comment on that. But in the many things I've tried over the years, the CRB is in a league of its own when it comes to dubby fatness. Granted, that has never actually been a tone that I've been after on purpose, so take my opinion for what it's worth. I liked it in its more subtle settings.

I just ordered one...($123 all-in)

It's better than a second Bass with flats and a great John Paul Jones 70's tone with an SA EQ2 ta work it! I'm putting a Rio Grande "Dirty Harry" (P-90) J in my hooptie P that has an old '04 Muy Grande P in it. I expect some great solo bridge pickup tone with CRB...

It made my P pickup sound dull and boring, and I was about to send it back, but then I gave it one final chance and discovered that it makes my bridge J pickup sound absolutely beautiful.

Settings:

Volume: Maxed - Gain and Brilliance: Noon

I can't believe I just noticed this thread because I have a lot of playing/gigging experience with the "CRB." Without a doubt, it is in my top two or three pedals that I simply cannot live without (I even purchased a backup...)

Here are my control notes:
  • The Volume knob is just that - an output volume control. It seems rather unaffected by the Gain knob.
  • I've never noticed too much affect from the Gain knob, though I generally leave it around 3:00 (without adjustment). If the design is consistent with some other One Control pedals, it probably works in concert with the other knobs. I would venture to guess that it helps accentuate the frequencies from the Brilliance knob (see below).
  • The Brilliance knob is probably the most useful control - it's the source of my "tonal magic." The instructions call it a "bandwidth control," but in practice it seems to be a sort of low pass filter that comes before the gain stage (granted, I'm assuming this from a few years use the pedal). For example, if you have your Gain knob set to maximum (fully clockwise), but the have the Brilliance knob completely rolled away (fully counter-clockwise), the pedal will only boost a small frequency band. However, by turning the Brilliance knob clockwise, you expose additional frequencies to the accentuation.

Below are my standard settings:
  • Volume: Adjust to setting
  • Brilliance: 9:00 or Fully CCW
  • Gain: 3:00
I generally use it with my trusty, heavily-modified MIM J-Bass. Even with both pickups equalized, the CRB produces quite a bit of bass/body emphasis without the "bark" or "bite" of the bridge pickup. The sound is tremendously dubby/bouncy. It's gotten me very close to the "John Paul Jones meets Robbie Shakespeare" sound in my head. For reference, my basic chain is below (top to bottom):
  1. Fender J-Bass
  2. Boss TU-3W
  3. One Control Crimson Red Bass Preamp
  4. EHX Holy Grail Nano
  5. GK MB500
  6. Markbass NY121 Cab
I hope that helps in some capacity. I might be able to get some sound samples this weekend if you like.

P.S. Keep in mind that it does not always play nice with other pedals. It seemed to nullify the effect of my Darkglass Alpha/Omega by killing a lot of the high-end.

Hey, thanks for sharing your dub recipe. I'm considering ordering the One Control Crimson pedal, it is possibly what I've been looking for in order to thicken my tone.
But, may I ask, what are you using the EHX Holy Grail for exactly?

I've had a few changes on my board but I need to keep the CRBP on the board. I am still interested in a blender loop pedal for it, as an insert, to mix wet/dry that I have yet to do.

The dry signal path would be:

EQD Splitter (A-wet~B-dry)
"Blender" + CRBP (dry)
Source Audio Atlas (EQ-Gate-HPF/LPF) (wet~dry mix)
Source Audio ZIO Bass Preamp (dry)

While it is great in the full on mode, I think it is going to be amazing as an additive to a blended signal and the Atlas Compressor and ZIO.

Oh man. This is an old reply (and I am not online often), but the grail is basically to create a bit of ambience/diffusion to the sound. Work wonders!

I also cranked the Flerb to get an ad hoc new wave flanger going.

As I mentioned earlier I owned one for a short while, and what I found was that it made my P pickup sound really dull, but that it worked beautifully on my bridge J pickup.

Not a tone I really had any use for, but with the bridge J pickup it did sound beautiful.

Yes, Jah Wobble/Bill Laswell, whose tone I do like, give me a reference point. What strings are you using? I think you've mentioned Dunlop flats somewhere.
