I'm on my way tomorrow to buy a Mesa Boogie Walkabout Scout. Now I'm terrified it'll have a common, off-the-shelf power cord!:eek:

I can afford either the amp or the power cord -- I'll just play it safe, and not plug the amp in until I get the local power grid rewired to audiophile spec.:eyebrow:

I'm willing to give them the benefit of the doubt here, until someone with a reliable set of ears and nothing to gain proves what we're all thinking...

I'm being optimistic here, because a lot of people call BS when it comes to instrument cables, but I can distinctly hear a difference between a Mogami and a Monster.

If you mean a Monster bass cable, they're made to suck high end, for some foolish reason.

Yup. Those things are worthless, in my opinion.

I remember reading the literature on these things, and it said something like "Made specifically to enhance low frequencies."

SUCK!

Love those Mogami cables, though. They're not only fantastically pure-sounding, but they last forever. I've used my 18-footer on at least 300 gigs over the past 4 years. My backup has never been out of the package :D

No. That's an incomplete characterization of the issues. The issue isn't a difference. The issues are $800.00 worth of difference from a power cord and $1500.00 worth of difference from a surge protector.

Easy there, big fella. Allow me to clarify.

Nothing to gain = Does not benefit (financially, or otherwise) from singing the praises of said product, ie: an endorser.

As far as the astronomically high price of these things, I could care less. I'm only interested to know if, in fact, there IS an actual, noticable, real world difference. People willing to spend that kind of money on these can decide for themselves wether or not the benefits (if any) are worth $800 and $1500 to them.

I don't believe it. I defy any seasoned audiophile who says they do to put up his mcintosh amp and bet that he can tell in a blind test which one is is the $2 dollar power cord and which is the $1000 power cord. You won't find one guy that will do that.

This stuff is more about putting on the cord and 'yeah I can hear it!' Which as someone said earlier is all about your imagination.

The only way to properly A/B these things would be to build an A/Parallel/B switching box to plug them and an amp into. That way you could switch between cords instantly, without shutting the amp down. To my knowledge no one has done this, and I can't help but wonder why not.

Nope... you record samples of the amp with each power cord, then you level match them, then you plug them into something like PCABX, or another A/B/X double blind software program.

It might...

You may have bumped the attenuator know while switching cables, or bumped a slider on your console, or...

The cable ain't going to change the level - but if you want a valid ABX test, you have to level match... because there are years and years of evidence that humans will almost always identify the exact same recording, played louder, as sounding "better".

I disagree. The onus in any such argument is on the side making the claim to prove it, not for the cynic to disprove it. Otherwise I could make any claim that cannot be tested (there is a little guy at the center of Jupiter eating cheese) and it would be "true" simply because it cannot be disproven, even though the claim is not based on logical principles. This is logic 101.
