Hi,
just got mine. I love the sound but it gets dirty really quick (gain over 11 o'clock not really usable for my stuff).
I'll have to check the DI as well.
Even with the gain almost at zero, it gets very loud very quick (and I'm using 2x10, 8 ohm cab), I doubt I'll be dialing volume over 9 o'clock anytime soon.

To get the most range of clean tones, dime the Master volume, and bring the Gain up to control output.
Swapping the preamp tubes can change the nature of the Terror quite immensely. My guitarist swapped two nicer 12ax7s in mine and it now has substantially more clean headroom.
I swapped for Sovtek 5751s and it's quite a lot less harsh on the gain spectrum. Loving them.
So Jerry put in two 12AU7 USA tubes, one GE and one Sylvania. Made a big improvement in "clean" headroom.

I rolled my tubes during a band practice. Every few songs I would try something different. The band just rolled their eyes but it got me to where I am now. Which is very happy with my amp. If I wouldn't have done this, there is no way I would have kept the amp. Possible I had an old tube in there though.
No-tubes are only covered for 90 days so it says in the manual as is speakers unless it,s a manufacturer fault that can be proved.
I,ve got the newer one which appears to have the original issues fixed.
DI into big PA for an open air gig and the sound boffin was well impressed,so was I.
Great amps in my opinion,well it suits me down to the ground.

I'd have to look to be sure but I think I have a Tung Sol gold pin ECC803S in V2 and a Russian Electro Harmonix in V1. I could be wrong. I had around 7 or 8 to choose from but some made a big difference some not much at all.
I really believe the Terror bass is an amazing amp. It is well worth the time to tweak it. And keep in mind it's the kind of amp that sounds good on it's own but sounds amazing with a band.
You can buy a mix of 12AX7's on ebay for pretty cheap and test for yourself. You don't have to spend big bucks on tubes though.
Before Jerry put the 12AU7s in he tried two old USA 12AX7s and they decreased the clean headroom. Not good! The AU7s did the trick nicely. So yeah, experiment and you can get some amazing results.
Avoid JJ preamp tubes. EH gold pins are a lot more reliable and rugged. JJs are good at first but if you plan on hitting them hard with od/fuzz they won't last very long.

I can vouch for the benefits of the gold pin JJ's over the normal pin. At least in my amps. I'm using a gold pin short plate in V1 of my Terror Bass -- remarkable difference in how the amp hits. Much smoother in the transition to breakup, and more pleasing to my ear. Still using the stock JJ in V2 because nothing I rolled there made a difference.
