Orange Smart Power!!!

Heres' my last test today... With the same amp (Terror Bass set the same) playing my pbass (low B) the Orange played about 1.5db louder than my SVT also played about 3hz lower as well. All this coming from my "ear-o-meter"...

Now I have no reason to argue with you if you say that your dual SP410's out performed the Ampeg 810. But if you believe that you can hear a 1.5db or 3Hz difference then you've lost your mind. You would've come across MUCH better if you had just summed it up as you liked the Orange better or it sounded louder to your ears. But trying to quantify what you heard just made you look rediculous.

I'm going to ignore the fact that putting the same amp on two different speakers (or sets of speakers, etc) isn't really an accurate way to test loudness or performance of said speakers...

but let's do a quick Google search:

Orange SP410s will run you about $1200 dollars in the states, give or take, according to my quick Google search. You have two, so you have a $2400 stack of speakers.

An Ampeg SVT 810E will run you about $1000.

Is the increase in performance you experience with the Orange stack versus the Ampeg cabinet worth $1400 to you?

Honestly, I'm not trying to be a smart alec here, I'm just wondering.
For as many gigs we do than the answer is yes! Tone, weight, size, every thing...

+3 db doubles amplitude. So a +1.5db increase is distinguishable and perhaps a more technical answer then "it's louder."

3hz, when talking about the low end (which was stated) could mean a difference of a quarter tone, or even a half step. Considering a low E is approximately 41 Hz, and a low B 30hz, it is completely plausible. In fact, not being able to hear that would be like saying you can't discern the difference between the first 5 frets of a low B string.

To reach 3db louder you must obtain twice the power and twice the cone theoretically. So pending one the frequency and the SPL level you listing to yes you can hear the difference as minute as .3db pending...

Golf Clap!

it must be nice to always be right. I would pay to see ANYONE who can distinguish the difference of .3db like you stated above. Even a 1.5db difference can be difficult to clearly hear, though it can be done. However, without a meter I still don't see how you quantified your comparison.

Either way, it seems that I'm in the minority who doesn't see the point in using isobaric alignments in pro audio so I'll bow out of this thread. To everyone who does like these, enjoy them and I hope that they'll continue to serve you well for years to come.

Just so Boostedrex does not feel alone. You COULD hear the difference of 1.5 db from maybe 110db, from 80db not very likely so what was the baseline for the "ear-o-meter"? The db scale is a log scale. As for 3hz being heard, most of what we hear from our basses are the secondary and third harmonics. The fundamentals are more felt than heard. So again what was the baseline for the "ear-o-meter" tests or was it meaningless rhetoric?
I would like to hear and play through one or two myself, I don't see it being a personal purchase. But it looks cool. If you need things small to pack in and out.

btw, I am absolutely positive the SP410 goes lower than the Ampeg 8x10. That's a given. The sealed 8x10 has pathetic low frequency response. The difference is probably much more than 3hz. The ampeg's F3 is probably around 80hz, and the SP410's probably closer to 60hz.

As far as overall loudness though, saying something like "It sounded 1.5db louder to me" is total shenanigans. At what frequency? The fundamental? Of what note? What harmonic?

I reiterate: Shenanigans.

IF you played one note, the low B, and distinguish a 1.5db advantage and 3hz lower, what the hell does that mean? The low B's going to have content at 30.87hz, 61.6hz, 92-something, 123 something, 155 something, etc.

Did you get a fretless and play 1hz down at a time with your magic ear from A1 down to B0?

If you mean that the F3 of the SP410 is 3hz lower than the Ampeg, your ear needs to be recalibrated because that's totally impossible. Sealed cabinet vs. ported cabinet dude.

Meh, I reiterate. Your ear-o-meter is shenanigans.

Again .3db starting from what point? Human ears are not that sensitive.
Twice the effective piston area or four to ten times the electronic power to double perceived sound level. :)

If you like the way it sounds and can afford it, and approve of the weight, I see no reason not to go for it.

But bear in mind if you did a little looking you could easily find a comparable performing cabinet that weighs half as much and costs half as much.

That's pretty much what everything I've said boils down to :)

very true... its time to look elsewhere I think. saying that I'll still try the cab, for ***** an giggles as they say.

And to finish off, yes I will probably be getting another Matamp 410 custom to match my other, reasons being:

Its light anyway - loaded with neo's
Its cheaper than the Orange cab
I already know that its response is awesome, it works for my sound spot on
and when i spoke to the guys at Matamp I think they'd want to break my face if i went out and bought Orange now!!!

I can always use the one for the smaller gigs.

I'm getting quite anxious about hearing my GK2001 through 2 of these awesome cabs now.

note to self: asking for opinions in the amps section causes technical arguments that leaves me out of depth, try searching for 2 hours next time instead of 1.

Thanks

I agree with all of this. Just my .02. Nice day to all.

Bump

I think the bottom line of these new SP Iso cabs is portability. I have the SP212, which I like just fine. The deal for me is I have a Jeep Liberty. I cant get my Aguilar DB412 cab in the back, but I can get 2 SP212's, or for that matter, 4 SP212's, which would give me the punch of 2 4X12 cabs. Punch is the whole thing with ISO cabs. Sure the volume and tone is going to be on par with the size of the cab, but with ISO, you are going to feel it more, with more punch. I have one gig I do in downtown Nashville at Tootsie's Orchid Lounge. Probably the worlds smallest stage and crappiest P.A. Anyway, I have tried using both the Orange SP212 and my Aguilar GS212 4 ohm cab. The Aguilar for some reason I have to turn up the volume of my Terror Bass to almost twice as much to get the same punch as the Orange SP212 at about half the volume. Gain and tone controls all set the same, only adjusting the Volume. After settling on using the Orange only on that gig, I have since been told to turn down more and that the cabinet is so Punchy, everyone feels it more. The tone is the same as it would be if it were a 112 cabinet. I have used an Aguilar DB112 before and a Markbass 112 500 combo as well. The Markbass is sterile sounding, and the Aguilar would never be able to handle that much power, so it is unfair to compare these ISO cabs against their respective 1x? cabs, due to power handling and punch. I am stating IMHO and I do own all of the above cabs, with exeption of the Markbass, and I know that I get more bang out of the Orange ISO stuff, even though I really love my Aguilar DB412's, but I cant transport them anywhere without a trailer.

I love.. lovelovelovelove the tone of Orange Amp Heads (I want a MK3 so bad..) (but nowhere close to having the money to afford it!)

The cabs arent as "loud" but they have a ton of punch and sound really nice. I wouldnt use em for a huge venue, but for recording or smaller stuff they'd be amazing. (ok you can use the bigger stuff for big venues but you'd be POOR afterwards :P)

Don't get me wrong I love the sound of my SVT, I will never get rid of it.. it's a keeper. As for my Orange rig. It out performs my SVT and day of the week in all aspects lighter the Neo drivers, Louder (when I need it) and better low end response. Now I do find I have to turn up the treble on the Orange rig a little more then my SVT. But that is just a turn of a knob.. Other than that I just want to see my Orange rig last on the road like an SVT has done for years.... if so it will be a great day for me!
