Origin Audio Cali76 FET compressor (1176 inspired)

Just added a Cali76 to my board. It's a permanent addition and the first compressor I have owned that I truly love as a compressor. I enjoyed the color added by the EBS MultiComp, and really liked the overdrive sounds from my Fairfield Accountant. The clean compression from the MXR M87 also was very good, but the attack was too fast to allow much thump and the sound lacked enough added character to earn a lasting spot. So, after trading my Blower Box for an IE Oxide that had top-jacks, I took a long look at my board and figured that I could fit the Cali76 if I sold my Grey Stache and Accountant. With the Oxide, SS/BS Mini and Subterranea, I think I have enough dirt, fuzz (the Mini gets very close to the BB and GS at the right settings) and even synthy octaver loudness. Now, with the Cali76 in place, everything sounds so much better--the Origin Effects Cali76 is awesome.

I planned to get the TX but went with the Standard version. After trying it and the TX side-by-side with 18v/200ma, I couldn't tell the difference at settings I would use, or at all. Since I like my comp first and would rarely use a DI (not a pro), I decided to save the bucks--first time for everything.

Thanks to all here including, of course, Bongo for very helpful posts and reviews. I’m done thinking about compressors and very happy about that.

I've noticed that the settings or similar from the nolly getgood gear rundown are quite popular among the B7K/cali76 owners...anyone else notice that?

I used those settings as a starting point when I first got mine, and liked it! Of course I have the input/ouput diffrent because I have a passive J and sort of use the cali as a boost (it's 1st in the chain) but attack release are still similar.

Hi,
How does the FEA Opti-Fret compare to a cali76-tx? I think @DirtyDuke played with both, but now sure. I'm just curious, I'm extremely happy with my cali but there's a lot of people waiting on FEA comps...

I have played both, but its been a bit since played the optic fet. From memory the opt fet could be darker and more effected. Also the controls for the brightness of the optic fet are inside. I really like my optic fet and it is an excellent choice, especially at the price. Its a steal. The side chain was cool too

The Cali just sings for me. Its huge but that works better for me. Sometimes I find it hard to adjust smaller dials to fine tune a compressor.
