Using a Non Reverse Tbird

You can hear this bass on Arriving UFO and Does it Really Happen?

He played a Tele bass with a jazz p/u in the bridge position on "Lucky Seven" from Fish Out Of Water. One of his most amazing bass lines IMHO. Great tone on that one too....

Apparently that bass was stolen not too long after the recording.

I always assumed that was his Jazz on Lucky Seven! Oh well.
I love that modified Tele bass, it has the control plate from a Telecaster next to the standard one. He plays it in the video of 'No Opportunity neccessary...', and you can see it lurking in the shots from Close to the Edge liner notes.
Never knew I was hearing it on Fish out of Water all this time!:hyper:

You can hear this bass (Gibson non-reverse Thunderbird) on Arriving UFO and Does it Really Happen?

Are you sure it's on "Arriving UFO"? I thought the liner notes to Tormato were pretty explicit, and mentioned him using the Thunderbird on "Release, Release" only... every other track on that album listed his Rickenbacker 4001. Except for "Madrigal" where he just played Taurus bass pedals.

Of course, it's probably been 15 years since I've looked at those liner notes, so I might be completely wrong!

Squire's Fender Jazz Bass also got used on "Parallels" from the Going For The One album.

Correct Sir! I meant to say Release Release. :rollno:
No pudding for me.

The 'Drama' album does offer a good comparison of the two basses. Does it Really Happen? and that bloody 'I am a Camera' song (forgot the name) both have very similar intros, with just the bass. One on the Thunderbird, one on the Rick. You can clearly pick out the differences in the tones of the basses, but they both still sound just like Squire.

Awesome looking bass... I had a '51 reissue for a while, the tone didn't suit so I considered doing a 'Squire', took the scratchplate off and there's a sodding great hole in the body. :(

I saw him playing a J-Bass on a San Luis Obispo concert with Patrick Moraz (Relayer era).
He´s one of the all-time greats, his sense of rythm and melody and his extraordinary backing vocals are unique, i love him dearly...too bad that he (or the people responsable for his merchandise) ripped me and my friend off when we ordered online a special autographed version of the "Fish Out of Water" CD that featured a bonus DVD.

I still play "Parallels" when testing a bass...:(

Wot? No love for "Into the lens"? (the bloody "i am a camera" song):atoz:

Just curious, where'd you find out which basses got used on which tunes? I had Drama on vinyl when it first came out & don't recall the liner notes listing make/model of instruments used (except perhaps for Steve Howe's guitars?).

Slight digression: is it me or do all the basses on Drama sound infinitely cooler than on nearly any other Squire recording ever?

Not sure... Not from the liner notes I don't think. I have it in my head as 'fact' rather than 'guess', so I think it came from Chris in an interview somewhere. And it sounds a lot like the Thunderbird.

Yep, Drama... Incredible bass sounds throughout. Except Run Through the Light, which always gets skipped as soon as Mr Horn starts singing...

I have nothing against Mr Horn, but the vocals to that song...:rollno:

I saw him with a White Electra MPC Outlaw.

That bass was a custom job made by the guys at St. Louis music way back in the 70's. I had the pleasure of playing it before it was delivered to Chris. It was a strange one, in that it had a big cavity in the back that was set up to use modular on-board effects like flanging, etc.

From what I understand, he still has that bass and still uses it on occasion.

iirc those were commercially available with that modular electronics package as standard; i.e., whatever was "custom" about Squire's, it wasn't the electronics.
