This is how babies get made.

Start first set. Everything's cool, the bar isn't packed, but definitely has signs of life. Drummer sees an old buddy and starts to hit a little harder as he's having more fun. Guitarist goes up a notch. Next song, so do you to keep up. The band is cooking, and the dance floor is packed. Guitarist can't hear himself as well now that the bar is packed. Yup, another round of grab the volume knob.

Oh, and you've got a grindy tone. Think you're going to hear that cabinet getting stressed?

Nope.

I've destroyed a cabinet or two that way over my career. Never lit one on fire, but bought a few drivers.

My point is that I am not a fan of thinking one can reliably come back from the edge when damage becomes a real possibility. Once you're in that deep, it's too late. Far better to gig a rig with enough headroom to stay in the safe zone. But, that's not a matter of Watts and specs. It's more like figuring out out if your gear is going to be the limit long before you get into that situation.
 
A square wave, or heavily clipped sine wave does not cause the speaker to stop moving. In effect, the driver becomes a mechanical low pass filter but still follows the polarity of the signal. Inerta/momentum are two factors that define the driver's mechanical low pass filter's properties.

Here's another way to think about it... a square wave is made up of (or can be defined as) a numerically related series of sine waves consisting of the fundamental and it's harmonics.

Over powering in general is bad but an amp with a 500 watt rating can still blow a speaker with a 500 watt rating by clipping and sending it too much power. Am I wrong?

If you have an amp (honestly) rated at 500w, and it's clipping, then by definition it is putting out more than 500w. That's the part most people don't understand.

Except that the Neptune is 80W into 4 ohms and the cabs are (were) 8 ohms, and how many 200W cabs will blow up at 201W (or whatever)?

Theoretically all of them, given enough time, if we're talking RMS and RMS. But in the real world, smart manufacturers would underrate their speakers so that doesn't happen.

Touching. They crashed an hour ago because they started facing each other on the same track, 300 miles apart.

Now I have a question for the super experts.

Amps are rated at some wattage RMS at some % THD. The common statement is that an amp can put out up to twice its RMS rating when clipping (derived from the relationship between a sine wave and square wave if I remember correctly). But then how do you account for the differences in ratings between a 150W McIntosh rated at .01% and a 150W Behringer rated at 5%? Logic would dictate they wouldn't each arrive at 300w and then stop producing power at the same point. So is there a mathematical relationship that explains and predicts that, or is each amp sufficiently unique that it can only be measured and not calculated? What happens if you rate an amp at 150w at 100% THD? Are there other factors that enter into the equation?

My prediction would be that the doubling of clean power to get max power already assumes 0% THD, and therefore anything more than that would lessen that increase to say 1.9x rated power or something like that.
 
THD of a square wave can't exceed 50%, because the fundamental has to be at least 50% to define the fundamental period.

Here's some info (and math) that backs this up. In fact, it will alwayd be less than 50% in practice, to the 9th harmonic it's ~43%
