overdrive/fuzz quest part 2

just finished the univox superfuzz clone, using orig NOS 2SC828 transistors. it's a pretty gnarly beast. instead of a two way switch for the mid cut, I added a scoop control (like the creepy fingers version) only on mine I also added a switch to select between two different scoop frequencies. I also added a clean blend to it.

Dude, I know you've moved onto bigger and better, but your Greedtone clone set to slight grind and the high rolloff on with the Team Awesome Fuzz going through it killed tonight with Freddy Cannon. Freddy's like punk rock for the late 50's and 60's and most of the time I just ran the Greedtone by itself but the occasional fuzztone was way cool. That hi cut switch takes just the right amount of edge off and the slight grind from the OD adds a little something to the mids that thickens the fuzz up like pea soup. Nice!
 
I built an SFT clone late last night and it's sounds great. I haven't A/B'd it with my orig catalinbread one yet, but the clone seems to be a bit more transparent to me. I need to mount it in a enclosure now.

I also made three different incarnations of the mosrite fuzzrite. IMO, only one of them sounds good, but that one sounds really good. the fuzzrite is so simple, it only takes about 10 minutes to build the circuit.

another one that I built, but haven't boxed up yet is the menatone red snapper. it was really nice stock, and even though they're pretty transparent, I modded mine for even more low end for use with a bass.
 
I have some questions about your Lovepedal Silicon Fuzz Master if you don't mind.

Did you build it stock?

How are the low gain sounds?

I've been tweaking various designs for weeks and I have found many great high gain sounds but I haven't found a low gain sound I like.

And I know that FETs usually work best for low gain but they have been giving me trouble lately so i want to mess with some BJT's. I have built DOOOOMMMMYYY sounding fuzz faces but nothing that wows me for low gain fast playing. I may have to go back to CMOS but I'm trying to expand my palate.
 
Basically what I'm saying is help!!! I've run out of circuits to try and I am looking for soemthing that does low gain and fast playing well. With many JFET and opamp/diode circuits I can't get over the sound of the initial breakup it's almost always unpleasant. Most circuits sound great when pushed into distortion but everything else leaves me flat.

I have some issues such as a high output low tuned bass and non-ideal practice amps to demo through but I just can't just find a distortion engine that satisfies on all settings.

I'm about ready to throw in the towel!!!

yes, IIRC mine is built stock.

IMO, most FF circuits aren't very good at low gain settings and the SFM one is no exception. it also can have somewhat of a fizzy decay at certain settings.


IMO, the throbak overdrive/boost is the best one of the BJT's that I've built to date. it'll do low gain to high gain and anything in between. most FF circuits are very dull at low gain settings.

IMO, with an added input attenuation control, the fuzz face type circuits can benefit greatly at the lower gain settings without getting too muddy.

BTW, my modded bosstone (with bass boost) is another good sounding one, but the throbak is one of my favorites.

So you mean maxing the fuzz and controlling gain with input attenuation?

yes, but not necessarily maxing the gain.
if you've noticed, the FF circuits clean up pretty well with the volume rolled down a bit, so an input attenuator helps a lot with that type of pedal.
 
here's another pretty wild sounding one, the Roland BeeBaa AF-100. It can switch between a clean treble booster or a heavy fuzz. I used NOS transistors in my build of it and it sounds exactly like the original with the exception that I made the treble booster in mine a full range boost with no low end loss.
