BTW, I built a Rockett Animal last night and it's really good on bass too. I just need to mount it in an enclosure now.

I was really surprised at how good this vintage circuit sounds with a bass. and you can get used ones pretty cheap too.
my only complaint was that it's output wasn't very high so I solved that with a clean Jfet booster on the output.

Besides the FET boost did you build it stock? How's the range on the tone control?

yep, it's otherwise stock. the tone control is pretty cool and actually adds low end when you turn it counterclockwise as opposed to just rolling of the highs.
i'll post a clip of it and the two Rockett pedals later today.

Hey John, can you tell me how that FX50 differs from the DOD original version please? I found on e at a decent price and am thinking about pulling the trigger on it due to the sound bites I heard you put up of your version of the FX50. It sounds killer to my ears and if the DOD version can come even close to that I may just grab one. Thanks,

if you're referring to the FX50B posted above, mine is stock with the exception of having an extra gain stage at the output for more volume. so, if you get one, it should sound nearly identical to mine, but just have less output.

Thanks man, I just ordered a DOD version. I have to say your tone, in the soundcloud entries, you're clean tone, is stellar! That's the kind of tone I dig on and try to get myself. Great tone clean and dirty!

I built but haven't boxed them yet, two vintage Maestro fuzzes, the earliest version of the FZ1 (3 Volt version / 3 germanium transistors), introduced in 1962, it's said to be the first fuzztone ever made. I've owned more than 4 of them in the past, and forgot how cool they can be. I did do acouple mods to mine, but can also run it completely stock.

the other one is the MFZ-1 which came about a decade later and is chip based. IMO, it sounds pretty darn good too.


check out this vintage demonstration record of the FZ-1! and if that's not enough, it demonstrates it with a bass!

I listened to a lot of them, and found the Black65PBass to be the most appealing to my ear.
Your web page mentioned the Wampler designs being among the best, and this one is certainly appealing.
