here's a couple more that have simple circuits but are good sounding pedals for bass that I finally mounted in their enclosures. The HAO Sole pressure (a really nice overdrive that sounds like a '59 tweed bassman), and the popular DAM meathead deluxe (another cool sounding one).

just finished completing two more, the HAO Rust Ride Bass Driver, and the BJFE Model G.

Stock, the Rust Ride is a single knob (volume) overdrive with a preset amount of overdrive/distortion. I modded mine to have a gain control so it could go from clean to very dirty, which, to me, makes a nice pedal a lot more versatile. IMO, it's an excellent sounding overdrive for bass.

Rust Ride:

the second one is the BJFE/Bearfoot Model G overdrive. The G stands for Gibson. This is how BJFE describes it:

"The Model G captures the unique voice and response of an often overlooked brand of amps from the 50s/60s ~ the Gibsons that were right there at the beginning with Fender, Valco ,Vox and Marshall..
Somewhere near the tweeds and supros but with a stronger and clearer voice, and a particular upper mid sound and snarl.
The Model G is related to the Honey Bee the same way a Gibson Falcon or GA40 is related to a Supro … cousins with obvious similarities, but important differences.
The volume, drive and nature controls are on both models.
The C knob is a big part of the difference – it controls several things at once: the upper mids eq and snarl and slight speaker compression … like adjusting to different speaker choices and ages or even like moving a mic aimed at the speaker."

A question in regards to overdrive pedals and it seems this, if any , is the thread to ask,

Of those you all have tried is the one non-tube overdrive pedal with

1) the widest frequency response and openness of tone, top to bottom?
2) Which one is the best in terms of bottom end retention?
3) Which is the one most dynamic/responsive to the touch?

If all are found in the same pedal all the better !

Also...which, if there is 'the one' is the deciding component when it comes to bottom end retention?
Which would one change in a pedal to up the bottom end response?

I can only speak for the ones I've used. The fulltone OCD loses a little bottom end but the drive/gain you get out of it is phenomenal IMO. The boss ODB3 has low end for days but can sound harsh and buzzy to some. I like it and use it frequently at a very low gain setting, blend all the way up, gain almost all the way down with a hint of gain dialed in. Darkglass VMT is awesome. Period. No low gain loss and has tone for years. Much ground covered in that little pedal. Fuzzrocious rat king is a dist/OD monster. I have to say though, through my rig I get a little bit of bottom end drop out but that's the way I set it. These are the pedals I use on a regular basis and they suite my wants and needs to the max.

I've heard and read on here, in this thread actually, that the Fairfield barbershop is awesome for low gain OD. There are TONS out there that are great on bass. Start playing the field and hopefully you'll end up with a winner for your tastes.

the Wampler Euphoria & the Cochrane Timmy both have a very wide frequency response with no low end loss, but IME, the Xotic RC probably has the widest range from lows to highs. that said, the barbershop and the Euphoria are two of my favorites out of the 180 overdrive distortion pedals that i've built so far.

IMO, all four versions of the Fulltone OCD have quite a bit of low end loss when using them with a bass.

The one I knowand the best one I have heard in person is the musiciansounddesign silverstone (http://www.silvermachine.de/en/effekte.htm).
A very good sounding pedal to my ear but I'm still fiddling with settings to get as much bottom from it as possible, or might it be that the overdriven bottom does lose a tiny bit of A$$ anyhow...?

John is correct, there is quite a bit of low end loss. Maybe I shouldn't have even mentioned it. But I use it all the time, so that's why I threw it out there. I like the way it sounds for my tastes and band. It's perfect for me. The raunch I get is second to none. For me.

I just finished boxing up a couple more. These two are also Bjorn's designs, the Fire Red Fuzz and the Model H. I've now built 15 different BJFE pedals and IMO, every single one of them is awesome in their own right.

The Fire Red Fuzz is Bjorn's take on a big muff but with a lot of changes to the circuit. it uses BC550C transistors for the amp stages, two 2N3819 Jfets and two 1N4148's for the first and second clipping stages, followed by a 2N5485 Jfet for the output amp. I find the tone control to be a lot more versatile than a standard big muff's too since it can go from slightly scooped, to flat, to mid heavy, to thin and bright. the distortion/fuzz is also smoother and more defined/articulate than a standard big muff yet still really gnarly, and there's no low end loss with this pedal.

The Model H was designed to emulate a driven HiWatt amp. This one uses a 2N5952 Jfet for the input amp stage, going into a CA3130EZ chip (the same chip used in the Bluberry OD). two 3mm red led clippers in the first clipping stage, followed by two 2N5952 Jfet clippers with a final 2N5952 JFet output stage. This one sounds really nice too as all of the BJFE pedals do. so after building all of these, i now completely understand all of the praise of the Bearfoot/Bjfe pedals.

Also...what's your favorite FF style circuit? I picked up a used Tweak Fuzz and was really impressed so I plan to try and build a bass modded FF for myself.

I have had an update on the MSD Silversone, I mentioned above;
There are two versions of this pedal, a guitar and a bass one.
I have the guitar version.
To make it the bass version is according to the builder a simple thing however taking 'a second'.
I'll have that done and am now really looking forward to the new pedal!

here's a new, and pretty obscure, one that, IMO, sounds awesome, the MegaDEN bass fuzz. it can go from clean, to overdrive, to fuzz and also has a clean blend. even without the clean mixed in there's no low end loss.

Looks awesome John! Did you make your own vero layout, is there one out there? The clips I've heard of this circuit sound great.
