I own 15 basses and one more in parts waiting to be assembled, and I want to build another Fenderbird and I want to buy a new Rickenbacker 4003s5 ... so that will be 18.

For me my goal is to stay 20 or less ...

But I may modify that to 25 or less ... plus I own amps keyboards and guitars ... no drum sets yet ...

I have 8 or 9. I keep one at my daughter's house. The others, I rotate every day. I just go right down the line and play the next one that day. None of them feel neglected that way.

My stubborn grandfather used to do that with his clothes. He had three sections of his closet, pants, shirts, and jacket. He wore the next one off the rack from each section no matter what the awful color was. Sometimes he managed to match, but most times well, he didn't.

If you want to keep your flats fresh I think you don't actually like flats. Flats are good for literally years, until they don't hold intonation anymore. Try different strings.

I don't know how yall play bass but dont notice a drastic change in string sound after 3 or 4 months.

That's how long it takes flats to break in. Then you play them for another 10 years.

I had the exact same situation (except they weren't drastically different), so I sold 2 of the case sleepers earlier this year. Much happier with just 2 of my mains now.

Case sleepers. I like that hehe. Mine have A LOT of history and memories so it'd be nearly impossible to imagine them not in my possession. And they would go for chump change which just ain't right.
