P-Bass options - Sire P5?

Depends on what you mean by "doesn't want to break the bank."
MarkBass has a P style that's sold at GC
If he's okay with used, Peavey Fury is cheap as chips.
For new, if FMIC is completely out of the question, I think a Sire P5 from a store with a good return policy is the best bang for the buck for a passive P. Yamaha BB if he's okay with a passive PJ.

Totally. As long as he has good pick technique, you're money. Slap some flats on for good measure and off to the races.
I don't blame your fellow bassist for feeling how he does about Fender's QC and not wanting a Squier.I’ve relinquished bass duties in one of my band to another bass player so I can focus on the lead vocals.
That being said he’s primarily an upright bassist, but does play electric bass. For the music we’re doing he needs a P-Bass and only has an American Jazz.
He’s interested in a new P-Bass but doesn’t want to break the bank. He absolutely doesn’t want a Squier, but he’s also staying away from Fender because if theur current quality issues and over pricing.
I was thinking about recommending a Sire P5 but know very little about them. Any input would be greatly appreciated.
I have a fretless P5 and it's just as nice as my Fender Am Pro II P Bass, but for over $1,200 less. So I recommend the P5 if you want a quality passive Precision style bass. Its pickups are better than the stock pickups from the Am Pro II P Bass. They sound balanced, unlike the low mid heavy V Mod II pickups from the Fender. And of course, it sounds like a P Bass should.

Sire makes great stuff incredibly cheaply. I don't know how they do it. Haven't played a P5, but I have played a few others, and they're great. The Yamaha BB series also sound fantastic, and won't break the bank either. The 734 or 735 sound fantastic. I'm sure the 434 is also a contender.
If I had to choose another P Bass again, I wouldn’t know what to decide. I love my Am Pro II, but I also got it during an end of year sale, I’m unsure if I would pay $1900 USD for it (or whatever it is now), I got mine for $1599.
If price is a factor , Sire P5 or P5R (rosewood) would honestly be my go to. For the price , you really can’t beat the quality you get from Sire. Also, their US customer support is pretty good.
If you want to spend a little more, Reverend has the “Sentinel” , a short scale P bass basically. Reverend’s build quality is honestly superior to anything at that price range, in my opinion. They come with amazing hardware, and their in-house pickups kick ass. However , Reverend pickups are very hot, so they’ve got a pretty aggressive sound to them.
Regardless, can’t go wrong with any P Bass really. It’s a formula that’s been perfected for some time now.
Edit: just saw you said 34” scale. Sire P4 all day. Fantastic instrument.

My Squier P5 gets as much play time as my $3000+. Elrick. The cheap bass definitely benefited from a tuner upgrade. The Squier is superior to any starter instruments available in the 70’s.
What do you mean by Squier P5? Sire P5 or a Squire P bass 5 string? If the last, which model Squier?

In 1980 I bought a new Toyota Corolla SR5 Hatchback and the oil pump check valve failed when I was driving at 70 mph on the Interstate. The valve stuck and the pressure was so great that it caused the oil filter to split open, losing all the oil and destroying the engine.
It was under warranty but because I had the oil changed by my local mechanic they blamed it on a faulty oil filter. The car was toast and trading it in cost me about a $5000 loss.
I’ve bought probably 20 new vehicles since then but never a Toyota, nor has my son or daughter. I’ve never seen a Toyota Funeral Hearse but my family has explicit instructions that if there is one, they’re to strap me to an “auto creeper” and drag my butt to the grave site.
Fair enough - Id also use the jazz neck p/u and get a comprehensive eq like a Source Audio or Q Strip or Empress to sculpt the rest

I've never warmed up to a Sire and it's a pity he does not want Squier -- it is his loss really. I would recommend Yamaha and even if it's a PJ Yamaha you can always play it with the J pickup off. Also those MIJ boxer Fenders are good. How about Alvarez? I had a P and J a long time ago. Some Yamaha Ps are active and require a battery. I had one also.
I have probably one of the best non custom shop non signature , non re-issue precision bass that Fender made in this century - bang for the buck. I am also the type who wants to have an American Fender and got lucky Standard Precision 2014 with CS-62 pickups. I've seen those from 900 -1.2 K I got mine lower than 900 locally. Currently on my local FB-Marketplace there is an American Precision for 1K asking

Turning down the bridge pickup is the lowest cost solution for sure. Was going to say the same thing.
